Hugger WARNING!

For anyone with a Pyramid hugger on their 1150.

I have just had my tyres changed and the tyre fitter was very concerned about having to remove the Pyramid hugger :eek that mounts on to the rear brake caliper. He stated that the M5 bolts that fit in to the hex bolt are nearly always seized and there is a high risk of them breaking. :eek: Good job I replaced said bolts yesterday! They did come off ok as I'd coated them in copper slip however they were still tight. :nenau

I have now removed the hugger (didn't do much anyway) so that I don't encounter problems in the future with changing brake pads and tyres.

You may want to check your bolts aren't seized. :thumb
 
I recently change the back break pads and sure enough the bolts were seized. I had to drill the heads off to get at the break calliper so the hugger now sits in the corner of my garage. :(
 
Copper greased mine, prewarned is prearmed :D

Mind you you're probably right about them being shite (reading between the lines) they're only relevant if the bike has all the linkage gubbins that gets the crap on. As the GS doesn't have this, the marketing is just preying on our minds. :eek:
 
Copper grease is a must, dont know which BMW dealer had been servicing my bike before I got it but when I did my service not one bolt had any evidence of being greased. :rolleyes:
 
Don't See The Point of a Hugger on a GS??

Don't understand why people fit huggers on a GS? - the rubber flap does a surprisingly brilliant job of keeping all the sh__te off the rear shocker and at least when the bike is filthy, it's easy to get in about everything for an easy clean?. I think people order them for a new bike, before really trying the original set up properly?
Mind you, I'm talking about the 1150 here - I think maybe the 1200 throws crap out all over the place? , so prhaps it helps on one of them?

Cheers for info, I was thinking of the carbon fibre one, looks nice but as you say, probably does very little. Talking of crap deflectors, I fitted a "fenderextender" on the front mudguard, and it makes no diference to the amount of crap up the front of the engine, strange :confused:

Wot you need is a Vespa front mudflap, looks like feck-all but sure as hell keeps the shite off the front of the motor. Then there's the small matter of your street cred :D Personally wouldn't be seen dead wearing one, but I do know some anally retentive people who would - and do ;)

i copperslip the bolts on my hugger and find they are always loose.

two pissy M6 bolts placed as they are, are not sufficient to hold a great big pendulous lump of plastic IMO :rolleyes:
 
I've copperslipped mine today having read this.

The bolts squeaked, creaked and graunched as I was taking them out. Considering that I only fitted the hugger two weeks ago, I'm pleased to have got to this before a problem was created.

I'll keep an eye on their continuing tightness....
 
Coppaslip question. BMW say some bolts, such as the rear wheel retaining ones, should NOT be greased in any way.

Why is this? I would have thought it can only make it easier to remove them when you have to.

The torque loading is usually based on a "dry" or "wet" thread, ie no grease / greased. Changing from dry to wet will alter :eek: the amount that you deform the bolt by aka the torque placed on the bolt head.

Here Here.... that was the most useless £17 I have spent on the bike.... no difference whatsoever :confused:

Yeah, rubbish are'nt they :eek: and I have gone and drilled holes in my lovely mudguard to mount the bloody thing, so I can't take it off now :confused:, I reckon that now I am ranting, it actualy makes the deposit of crap up the engine WORSE grrrrrrrrrrr :spitfire.................................................................. :beer: ooh thats better

Great... now you tell me... (waiting on NN to ship me one right now...)..

Anyone dissagree with this assesment? Does it stop the stone chipping anyways?... any reason not to try to get NN to cancell mine?

Took my hugger off yesterday to change my rear pads - not been off for about 18 months.

Bolts out no probs. I just sprayed a bit of WD40 on them before I screwed them in.
 
First time since fitting the hugger that the weather & my destination were both shit. Total waste of space having ther hugger, probably take it off when I can find the relevant Steptoe s/s bolts. No different to Ninja mans unhugged Adventure, it's unhugged 'cos it's now on mine, (for a shorter time than I'd anticipated. :nono)
Ditto the fenda extenda, except it won't be coming off,but it don't stop the crap hitting the bike. May consider getting the machine shop to turn up some extended S/S M6 special bolts, so that I can mount a piece of ally across 4 of these and protect the engine cover.
