just reading up on the last boxer rally bikes and wondered whether anyone had ever tried to modify an 1100GS or 1150GS to use in events like the Cambrian Rally. One of the obvious differences is the use of a convention front end. Be interested to see if anyone has ever done this?

I have read of people swapping an 1100 front end to conventional forks (notably some Americans and Dutch BMW dealer). It's complicated by the lack of a normal steering head (or indeed a frame) on oilheads. You need to fabricate a subframe and steering head which picks up on the existing subframe / suspension mount points on the engine.

There are some threads on Adventure Rider about it but the one I just found has most of its pictures missing.

Edit:
It appears that HPN (of course) have also done it, although theirs looks to be based around a complete new frame:

Plenty of standard GS's used in the cambrian rally, and some write ups of the rally on the site.. -

GS

umm - hadnt really thought about the lack of a proper front frame. Would be an interesting project.
