NO, not you RK, I was describing the mental firework display that is original GSER.

Original GSer.......you might have broken the record with your thread, "I blame Ewan" ?
7 pages of replies in 48 hours, that is why I love this site AND all its members, it is vibrant, alive and full of fun, well done for your provoking thread.

As I said before it is all about riding bikes, if we have GS's we are the lucky ones but in the past I have had loads of fun on a Suzuki X5 200 !

Still enjoy a Yamaha XT600 which I bought in Arizona and rode all over the South West USA, every year for 7 years, did Phoenix to Sturgis three times, in 1990 there were half a million bikers at Sturgis for the 50th, 95% were Hogs, then Mrs. and I turned up on the little XT and never heard a bad word from the Harley boys, patch club members or any one.
I brought the XT back to UK to serve as town hack in London, a job it does really well.
So it is about riding!
Barrie.

Dear North - does that 'GS & sleeping with women half your age' work for you? I've tried the whole package - 1200 (red), Rallye II suit GS1 Boots, GS1 gloves, System 5 Helmet, BLOC shades, let my beard grow just enough to look as if I was in the desert yesterday, driven thru 2 muddy puddles and left the dirt on but when I pull up in the supermarket car park, loose the helmet and light up a Marlboro women cross the road to avoid me - where am I going wrong?

Puzzled of Letcombe.

Should have bought an 1100 :D

So does mean im not a proper Gser then , I have an Arai RX7, a Belstaff jacket, textile jeans that dont even match my jacket, Bobo or combat boots. and Triumph gloves.

Ive only met four other members of this forum, one cause I bought my GS from him, one cause I bought something from him, one cause I sold something to him and another that I met at a diner who recognised my bike from pictures on this forum.

Don’t you love these threads, total nonsense but such fun!

Interestingly OGSer’s initial post actually complains bitterly about HIS loss of status. The fact that car parks and meets are now getting littered with GS bikes means he can no longer cultivate that ‘real man’ ‘real bike’ image. It is hard to portray yourself as an adventurer when Mr and Mrs Suburbia are standing next to you in matching Savanna suites talking about their next ‘off road adventure’ in Costa Del Sol. He looks on in horror as his Kudos is eroded with each GS BMW gleefully sell.

Of course they (BMW) are in on this terrible act, everyone knows they have softened the 1200GS made it light and easy to manager, taken away the need for strong fearless men to have the nerve to sit astride an 1100 or 1150. So I feel his pain. In fact out the other day we saw GS after GS, “they must be going to a organised ride” I sobbed to my wife realising my lack of exclusivity. “Of course dear “she said probably eyeing some guy on a KTM and thinking if only I were on one of those.

So don’t be harsh with OGSer’s his self esteem is ruined he no longer feels special when he arrives at that car park, people who once stopped and admired his mighty steed, now shrug and say another GS or worst that their kid sister has one of those!

Hmm where is that KTM dealer :D

No at the end of the day, I wanted something that stands out from the crowd (didn't really realise just how big the GS crowd was)

Rode the N260 through the Pyrenees (in Spain) a couple of weeks ago (great road). Saw loads of bikes on the road. At a conservative estimate, around 40% of them were GSes, of one flavour or another. Bit hard to stand out from the crowd there.

Like I said, I was never into bikes, the only ones I'd seen up close belonged to my Borther in law as a succession of Jap stuff that all looked pretty much the same to my untrained eye. Then you take a look at the SV650 and SV1000.. how many bikes use the same engine? The F650GS is nearly the Aprillia thingamybob... the GS at least is a GS and nowt else to my (limited) knowledge

I fear some of this has passed me by.

At least 70% of the posts on this thread are responding to each other rather than OG's posts. The insults are failrly evenly distributed. I fail to see the problem with OG expressing himself, nor with everyone else responding.

If, as they say, you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

I also think it's rather purile to slag someone off for a typo, after all we're bikers not academics (at least on here we're not).

BTW Mr McG is not to blame for anything except enouraging Vinnie Jones into going to far flung places and filming it and then returning.

I left this thread till today to read it. Quite interesting indeed. Original gser has some very valid points. I, as a 5year gser will probably considered by some as a relative newcomer to the gs scene,35 years biking though, whilst I look upon newer converts, especially since the lwr programme, to be jumping on the bandwagon. Cant help it, its just wot my wee brain tells me to think.
Unfortunately this opinion is unavoidable when there is a strong social element involved around a particular pastime and it gets too big to be cosy.

Whilst we all fall into the trap of wearing clothing and fitting accessories which are praised and endorsed by fellow members, some are "more enthusiastic" than others and tend to make a mockery of what is supposed to be an individualistic and somewhat rebelious mode of transport. Outsiders might think we look kinda funny when a group of fully loaded gsers go past on their 50 mile ride out, with enough gear on to go twice round the world. Fortunately there is enough of us who do use the bikes for their intended purpose to validate the image. And yes, I consider myself to be in the lower end of this group.
The problem for me, and presumably, Mr original gs, is when you do see a brand new shiny gs with all the trappings, with the rider decked out in all the matching bmw gear on, right down to the gs gloves and shiney plastic boots, it does sometimes smack of "lifestyle choice"..... doesnt it ? 6 months down the line, some will maybe move on to golf, some will stay. Some will always have been here, but have upgraded.

As for forums. This is a tricky one to comment on without offending some folk.
Ask yourself, if someone gave you this choice. Its either the forum or the bike. Some of you would choose the forum. You would!, dont kid yourself. You know who you are.
Im sure there is a sizeable amount of members for whom this forum is their chief means of social intercourse. Many of you have not had so many "friends" since before the children came along. ( not me, ive always been popular). A lot of you dont have a GS, or indeed any other form of bike. Nowt wrong with that, just a little bizzare. Tell me why someone?
A lot of "real gsers", who go to far flung places and in all sort of weather, real bikers, spend an awful lot of their spare time glued to the screen, waiting for someone to say something. For me its like having someone visit the house to have a chat about bikes and things, but you dont have to give them biscuits and coffee. Nowt wrong with that either.

I think Mr original gser is a bit like most of us. Protective of what he feels is his domain and resents people joining it and diluting his wee bit of individualism. Or maybe he is just trying to stir things up a bit, which he has, judging by the knee jerk defensive insults which were hurled at him. Shame on you all, I thought that we were better than that.

Finally, can ANY biker resist looking at their reflection in the shop windows .... of course you cant .... and yer a liar if you say you dont !!

Does any of that make any sense ?
