i have bought a garmin 60CS

Shedracer,

I concur with y2blade re the aerial. You'll get along fine without one.

As far as software goes. Other than the much debated City Select scenario, for walking and off road use, then you should be looking at MemoryMap, Anquet, or Fugawi software.

Be very very cautious about buying in the US, unless you are 100% certain that it will come with the European (Atlantic) basemap. The basemap is the one pre inserted by Garmin, giving basic location details. Have a US basemap, and by the time it arrives here, there will be no map within its memory for it to use as a reference. It will still give you co-ordinates and BNG but no map. This basemap, once put in by Garmin (and so I'm told) can not be extracted or changed.

Any help???

Paul.

Memory Map, Fugawi and Anquet are all competing versions of basically the same thing - a computerised 1:50000 Ordnance Survey map.

You can use these products (I've got Fugawi but I believe the others are very similar) to transfer routes and tracks to and from the GPS. You can draw routes / tracks freehand on the map displayed on your PC, or you can make a track on your GPS by recording as you travel, and then transfer that to the PC to see where you went on the OS map.

So for example, you could plan your route along some green lanes on the OS map on the PC, by drawing a track where you want to go, and then transfer this to the GPS, and navigate by following the line on the screen.

What you can't do with any of these products however, is automatic routing along roads, or transfer the actual maps to the GPS. If you need either of these functions you'll have to buy City Navigator (or Select).

i have h=just been given city navigator to try and put on mine,it has benn regestered and put on my mates 60cs

what do i need to do to put it on mine too?? if i can!!!

PS i havent regestered my 60c online!! dont know how too!!

all help greafully recieved as always:beerjug:

Each mapsource licence allows you to unlock 2 Garmin units so your mate needs to go to the unlock page on Garmins page and request and additional unlock code. At this time he will need to enter the serial number of your 60c and then with the unlock code that garmin issues you can unlock the maps for use on your unit.

Confused - come and talk to me at the hog roast and I'll try and explain in plain Engleesh ;)

should i get mine regestered online??? if so, how???

If it is the City Navigator, then it will probably go in to your 60. However it wasn't really designed to work with that unit type. It was designed for the StreetPilot model.

Too be honest not sure what functions you will get, if any. Rather like my version of Metroguide, it went into the 60 but wouldn't do tracking or routing. You might find the Navigator is the same. You almost certainly wont do the 60 any harm, because when you are eventually forced to use City Select ( if you want to use your 60 properly, eventually you'll have to get it) then it will overwrite any other software.

Meanwhile, your mate probably only had two unlock codes for the software, once its in his and now your's then it won't load into any other GPS unit.

I honestly think Garmin have got us poor consumers over a barrel. They produce different units requiring different software, all of which basically does the same job. I appreciate the two unlock codes, as that prevents piracy, but they certainly have us screwed!!!

Makes no difference - registered or not. It just helps Garmin know who has what unit where they bought it etc. There is no connection with registration and unlock codes....I think ....?

ok ,where do i find my serial number???

please
