I've been reading through various threads on this site and I am having a bit of a problem. I currently own a G650X country (my first bike), I am now looking for an upgrade. I have about 6k to spend but i can't decide weather to go down the F800GS route or the 1150GS route. I have seen you can get fairly decent 1150 for that money but I don't know much about them. what are they like in terms of reliabity/maintenance etc? Any help from you guys would be much appreciated.

Cheers

1150’s are Heavy , and a bit agricultural… saying that most things can be fixed on them …. Home maintenance fairly easy depending on your skills…. Loads of accessories can be found easily…. And loads of knowledge on here…. They’re good for long distance travel too.

For £6k if you hunt around you’d find an F850 gs…. Lighter…. Not so much road presence but loads of bells and whistles , and at 95bhp plenty of poke …. Mine feels perkier than the 1150’s I’ve owned… and I’ve had a few 👍

F850gs...over 200 kilos so.... that's 50 kilos more than your X... mostly 50kgs of useless stuff.
Keep your pennies and/or spend them on travel.
Think lots...

if you get an 1150 , you will fuck yourself , other bikes might go faster , handle better ....but the 1150 is such an all-round bike anything after .....is just not the same.
yes they are a bit heavy , but they do everything you need.

and smoother gear changes

How's the Pyrenees trip planning going Jake ?
Have you got the 650 + £6k....or £6k in total.....loads of options.

You’re considering a bike you know nothing about. I’d do some research. I know you have asked the question on here but you could broaden your search. The f series of bikes is totally different from the r. In between those there are many bikes from different makers. Do you do a lot of riding? Long distance? Off road? Rather a chain or shaft? Both bikes are good solid dependable machines. For comfort I’d go for the 1150. There are so many variations on both bikes and on the 1150 a standard one would be hard to find. Depending on your requirements a vstrom could be a good choice. Remember a 1150 is going to be at least 20 years old. JJH

GS boxer? After 2017 imo.
Ridden 1150, owned 2015, 2017 and 2022.
The 1150 IS a tractor. 2017 I would say the gearbox was approaching acceptable.

This will be your 2nd bike - the F800GS would be a nice step up with not too much increase in weight. You would get a great one for £6000. Keep a while & if you get the itch to change for something bigger it would have to be a 1200GS TC, again alot of bike for the money.
Owning a 1200GSA TC I'm biased of course.
