first GS May 04, superb, few problems in first 3500 miles after that great. Brill trade in at local dealer with 21500 miles on clock, led to 06 Model April 29th. Six weeks later 2500 miles used no oil, gearbox goes into gear like butter, tickover smooth as a daisy, brakes excellent, finish superb performance goes like a treat what more can I say.

Find the more you use them the better they are.

tentoone you are somewhat wide of the mark with the courier comment.

Spend about 30 seconds in london and you'll get winged by a battered looking R850R or R1100R.

There's hundreds of them. They are very much a courier favourite.

I fact I'm of the opinion that mine was nicked for parts for couriers.

Thats right. Courior Systems purchased a job lot at a massively reduced rate and their riders spend their lives bitching about them (weight, width etc). However, such was their investment, they have to run them for a lot lot longer and service them in house as the only way to afford the frequent reliability problems.

Back in the real world, Couriors who ride their own bikes choose bikes that are reliable, not cost the earth to purchase and maintain and actually last.

As you've just completely contradicted your earlier post about these bikes not being used as couriers I'll not bother anymore


Funny, my R850 didn't cost me much, did about 50k in short order with nothing going wrong, so my opinion is that you are talking out of your lower hairy orifice, once more.

2005 R12GS 8,000+ miles - never ever had a single problem - did 3,100 miles in 4.5 days across Europe last month - no issues at all and the weather was crap... Best bike ever owned... would by same again..and again..and again!

Quite right. Its an appalling bike. Fast, smooth, handles well. And riddled with flaws; the first one turned up at the weekend; a bulb blew after only 12k miles. Quite clearly the beginning of the end.

Registered july 05 had done 5900 miles when sh*t hit the fan.

Hmmm, I thought it was earlier models that were affected.

What was it like in terms of oil consumption?

Mine was new at the same time (in June '05) and I've just done 12k one it. Seems fine so far.

Problem with the 1200GS in my opinion is that it was rushed out too quickly with far too many innovative features. A lot of the supposed weight saving is again in my opinion just BMW cheapening and dumbing down the product. The 1200 GS is not a patch on build quality or realiabilityon any other BMW that I have owned and as far as I am concerned will be the last new BMW that I buy. The 1200 RT is also another example of this new type of BMW not a patch on the 1150RT which was a superb motorcycle and quite rightly one of the best selling BMW bikes ever made. Personally I will always regret being taken in by the hype and buying a 1200GS rather than following my head and buying the 1150 ADV that I set out to buy. I have no confidence wotsoever in the bike and the more I learn about some of the unbelievably bad design the more indredulous I become that BMW would ever put their previously good name to such a heap.

I'm assuming you've had a similar experiences to the original poster and I wish you luck with your next purchase, whatever that may be. But considering the time frames involved in BMW's development cycle I don't see how the design was 'rushed out too quickly' and I'm lost as to how the weight savings and new technology equals dumbing down a product.

As has been said before there's a lot of positive ownership experiences about but there's little point in starting a thread on a daily basis saying "Hey my GS didn't fail me today."

To put a positive spin on things I've got 65,000 KM, no issues and I'll stand by it as a quality product, and the best product I've owned in my 20 plus Japanese motorcycle and 20 years plus of riding.

Hopefully the dissatisfied owners find whatever they are looking for, whatever brand that may be.

And your source for this info? And while you're at it, how about telling us which trade journal you saw the bit about BMW sales being down and Yamaha sales increasing by 22%

This isn't for you, Tentoone, but for the people who might think my meaning was the one you have distorted and hijacked.

I respect Daves right to choose his own holiday, but I wouldn't visit so many countries in such a short time and see nothing of where I'd been. He's explained what he was doing, but it wouldn't be my choice. It says nothing about the bike - but don't let that stop you!

I prefer to spend a little more time stopping off and taking a look at places. Generally, without using dual carriageways if I can. That means I have to accept lower daily mileages and and fewer destinations, but I like it that way. Then, as Bob Southgate will remember, the odd day blasting cross country between Krakow and Prague via the mountains and twisties goes down a treat!

The reasons couriers choose to use the bikes they do is nothing to do with the thrust of your postings. CB500s, for example, are cheap, bulletproof and survive on huge neglect and cheap servicing from dodgy backstreet mechanics. Perfect for their needs, but I wouldn't choose to ride one as my personal transport. Of course, if you're the sort of chap that aspires to a CB500, then that's fine by me.

yes I did.....their aftersales has come on leaps & bounds in the last couple of years.
It seems that they didn't have the resources to keep up with the sales, but now it's a lot better and I've had NOTHING to moan about either bike or dealerwise.

Might even chop in my 'priller for a K1200R but don't tell 'em yet

Same thing happened to my mate who was riding an 1150GSA yes an 1150GSA. It was fixed by BMW in Munich within 2 days. Meanwhile my 1200GS took me all the way to and from Slovenia via France, Germany, Italy and Austria without missing a beat.
....and the morale is that any bike can go wrong not just 1200GS`s.
