I'm looking to spend £250 to £300 (so Rukka out of the question!) and been contemplating Spidi (eg. canyon etc) or maybe Rev-It. Any other alternatives? Needs to be suitably waterproof and ideally can be adjusted to suit differing climates, ie. summer and winter, UK and Europe, so I guess layered.

Oh, and I ride a GS just in case anyone assumes otherwise!!!

I got a "Hein Gericke Summit GORE-TEX® Performance Shell Jacket, black" from the bike show reduced from £400 to £260, maybe they're still doing some deals on it. They've been pushing out email discount vouchers till recently so you may still get some money off.

Seems pretty good so far, removeable high collar, and thermal liner, has got vents and rear pocket and plenty of front pockets that don't seem to let water in. Best bit is double cuff to keep water out. Will have to see if it's a bit too much for summer use.

And think it's great. Owned for 18 months now and kept me dry through the worst weather I have ever ridden in. Used all last winter for commuting, down to Italy last August where the multiple vents came in handy. Two waterproof pockets on the outside, phone pocket between outer and inner zips, inside pockets, zip out liner and very adjustable cuffs.

Really don't understand folk who want to spend more!

Firstly what size are you ?. Have a look at Halvarssons your price is right in there ball park, and its decent kit.

Thanks for the responses :thumb2
Just run through the recent Spidi jacket thread and it would appear that there's more to this than I thought -Goretex, 3 later etc!!! At my budget I'm probably some what limited anyway, unless someone has a nice hardly used Rukka that they're unloading within budget :D

Oh yes, 6', 170lbs, 40" chest, you know, the size where you never find a bargain!

Check out George White in Bolton. Not a million miles from you and have some bargains including Rukka. Basically they are a clearing discount warehouse and stock rack after rack of kit.

Hein gericke are good but having changed from them to Rukka there is no comparison, pricey but as in all things you pays your money and takes your choice.

george whites warehouse in swindon still have alpinestars gore-tek adventure jackets for £99 !!!
:friday

Darkhorse, thanks for the headsup but unfortunately I'll rattle around in a 44!

The links to the various Rukka/Klim/etc have got me thinking I might hold off a little longer and get something a little better - certainly going for a Goretex option takes the worry out of British weather!
Anyone with any experience of the Rukka Athos? It would appear to be a good compromise between Enduro and a more "general" use jacket. I've just added £100 to my budget though!

Have you got to buy new?

I buy my stuff second hand. All of it has been worn a couple of times at most, and stupidly cheap compared to new.

It's always worth having a hunt around charity shops, I've been lucky a couple of times, and my 6 quid Mbw summer trousers, complete with labels still on them are the same as any from new shop.

Worth a thought:thumb

I bought the Athos jacket with lock out zip in November. Like it but the zip affair is a bit fiddly at first. Rode down to Provence last month in foul weather, 940 miles two days in a mixture of fog and rain. Warm comfortable and totally waterproof. Bought the trousers from George White in Bolton, again excellent but not very warm without two pairs of long johns underneath.

Jacket pockets are a bit fiddly with winter gloves on, only two exterior and a little bit too far round the chest for easy access. Quality is superb. Try before you buy for sizing.

Aerostich Darien. Good enough for Ted Simon for his second unsupported round-the-world trip.

Purchase price and postage probably within your budget but you may get stung with customs duty and VAT, however they come up fairly regularly on eBay.

Check out www.louis.de they have one Rukka jacket listed at 299 euros ( got the womans version in August for my wife) and a couple more at 399 euros, I've bought from them before on a number of times both from stores and online and their service has always been excellent.
