Wondered if anyone could help me with my IPod Classic 80GB.

Some orange got spilt on it whilst it was playing then it died :blast. Have let it dry out in airing cupboard for 3 days and plugged it in this morning and it says it's charging. The normal menu does not come on just the apple logo then a big red X directing me to Apple support. Have tried to put it into Disk Mode like Support suggests but it will not do it. I Tunes will not recognise that it is there on the USB either.

Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Many thanks
Steve

If you spilled Orange on it and now you're just getting the Apple logo on the screen I would suggest some bananas, grapes and some double cream.

If you spilled orange juice on to it then you won't have done either the circuit board or hard disk any good. The normal recommendation for electronic gear that you've covered in any fluid other than very clean or distilled water is to soak it in a couple of changes of de-ionised water then dry it. Drying it directly without this tends to leave a lot of residue with nasty electrical properties on surface mount boards. This goes double for non-SSD hard disks which have got little breather holes. If you are unlucky with those you can crash the read arm into crud on the disk.

If it is out of warranty and you really are getting nothing out of it then you could try re-soaking it in clean water and then letting it dry out at room temperature for a while.

You also could try opening it if you really want to see what's happened - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3B9cEMWENKk - and that could let you do a bit more particular cleaning with lint free cloth, de-ionised water and lots of luck...

If you have an Apple store near you then why not make an appointment at the genius bar. They really are good and have all sorts of gizmos to check things out. Have to say though I would start raiding the piggy bank for a new one......
