Well I think my feck'in bike is sick again. Haven't ridden it in a few weeks and when I started her up today there was a disconcerting knocking sound coming from the right cylinder.

I was thinking that it might be due to the a lack of oil around the crack, push rod and piston but am just not sure.

Any ideas of knowledge ones...

How old is it ? How many miles on it ?:confused: Was it on side or center stand before you started it ?
Interesting user name.... My son wants to know if you play for leinster ;);)

Yep she's a 04 and was sitting up on the centre stand for the last few weeks. Only has about 21k miles on the clock and had the oil topped up about 3 weeks ago.

But worst of all I don't play for Leinster. I'm just a long sufferring fan. But at least we won on Saturday!!! Come'on Edinburgh do us a favour!!

Yeah, mine (30k) did that after the Christmas lay-off. Sounds like piston slap but can't be as it was fine the next morning and has been ever since. Battery was only just up to the job of turning the engine over. Had similar on a 1150, sounded like the cam-chain adjuster wasn't working. No idea what caused it but it's been fine since. If it was OK when you put it to bed, it can't have fallen apart by itself unless Santa's little helpers have been gnawing at the metal since the last trip.

Umm, well it is a BMW. My 7 series seems to manage to do very random things. Well at least the GS doesn't have iDrive...

........ Well at least the GS doesn't have iDrive...
Not yet....
The iDrive has rippled itself already to the 5 and 3 series. I guess it is only a matter of time before the currently known instrument panel of the GS will be completely removed, a large LCD display will come in place and the iDrive "Motorrad Edition" will make its debut.

ABS,ASC,RDC and ESA all made the leap from automobile to Motorrad so far, so why should it be any different for iDrive ?

Let's hope they are not going to have Windows Mobile as the OS shall we ?!
:D

As long as it only knocks on start-up and does not continue to do this there is no problem. It's just the hydraulic cam chain tensioner not doing it's job until it gets some oil pressure.

You can get the same thing happen when running very hot and too thin oil.

mine made a clanking noise once when the battery only just got it started once. can't explain what caused it, but it's been fine ever since :nenau

Agreed, was worried about mine making a clanking noise on start after sitting for a week or so. Had it checked by the BM mechanic...'They all do that sir"
