I thought I had seen everything

I got absolutely drenched the other day. The suit worked well but wow it was heavy with water and I got wet troose & feet just taking it off. Must get some side panels or some vinyl cloth covers to tie onto the frame inside.

Since I was 17. :P

The GSA soaked my leggings more than any bike I have owned except a Honda XL250 Motosport with 21" front wheel, knobblies and tiny front mudguard.

TBH, I wouldn't care but that much water becomes a great heatsink. I've since dumped the rear shovel and plan to fit rear side panels or vinyl cloth frame covers.

Maier splashguard does the trick perfectly and stops all that crap coming through onto the back of your legs:thumb

I bought the bike with the standard shovel only. 10 miles on a dirty road and the back of my legs and the whole underside of the bike were splattered.

I've fitted an Ilmberger hugger that stoppped a lot of mud, but was fitted when so much water got thrown up. I was out again in rain and mud. It's def better without the shovel. A much longer hugger would be better still.

It's designed so you can carry your spare oil with you at all times. Oh shit I've just realised what I've said - I've mentioned "oil" in this section

Idea for a new farkle.

Heavy duty nylon bags that sit on the rear subframe to keep the water spray at bay and can carry spare oil cans. Sorted :D

How many times have you ridden 4-500 miles in rain and sleet, may I ask?

Or do you take the car ?

Course I take the car. And I stopped flogging myself with birch twigs years ago too. I even use some waterproofs when its raining - clever that way.

Why on earth would anyone chose to go that far by bike in sleet when they had a car available?

Because the wife has the car and I dont want another car to go with my bikes. So I put up with the odd day of cold and cr@p. Also I usually prefer to use the bike. Its not like UK has a whole season(s) of ice and snow like Germany or northern America.

It that Mr Bean riding the GS?

Laugh all you want. in the eighties I bought a more modest version for my daily commute all winter in New York - wonderful bit of kit - I think it was called a tablier and i bought it at Dafy moto in paris. Never saw one in the US other than mine. If I dint live here in sunny southern california I would have one for my GS
The Hippo Hands lined muffs always scared me though... too slow to get my hands in and out in lane-splitting urban traffic - always relied on warm gloves, handguards, and eventually heated grips. I even put the R80 G/S handguards on my R100

Comfort trumps style when it comes to commuting.

Distance doesn't matter. Weather does. It's cold and shite at the moment and my 15 mile commute to Tottenham would take an hour or more by car. Bike? Meh..., 25 mins so muffs to keep mt fingers working. Shitebag? Yep, I'm gunna get one soon. And yes, I've got a car but for my own sanity I think I'll stick to the bike.

good on ya David, you stick with it, i applaud you :clap:clap:clap

necessity

the old shitebag served me well this morning on the ride home, just rode home through freezing fog and kept surprisingly warm, I could feel the icy wind just lapping round the edges and tantalisingly tickling my testicles through my leather troos, muffs on to with heated grips on level 1 sorted.:thumb

Couldn't give a toss what it looks like, function over appearance any day.

Well I must be daft because I don't want one and I do commute year round.

The shitebag and muffs would both get I the way when I stand up on the pegs in Tesco's car park...

Oh dear oh dear, what have we become.

That logic is fine if all you do is ride to work or just pop to the chip shop.

What if you go away on the bike in dec/jan/feb

If you had a car available, why would you ever use a bike?
