Just 3 weeks old and my adventure rolled itself off the sidestand

It was comfortably sat outside my house, and we were getting ready to take our 2 friends out for a ride. I pressed the starter, and as I put my gloves on and carried on talking to everyone the bike simply fell over! What a toal arse.

(There is a slight downhill incline, but every other bike I've had has happily sat warming up there)

Nearly £15k lying on it's side on the tarmac. Scraped the engine cover and crash bar, and curved the pillion footpeg - could have been worse I suppose.

I would be happier if I had a wind-swept off-roading story to tell, but outside the bloody house -

Totally gutted.

I went to my friends got off the bike and rang his doorbell then turned back to the bike just in time to see it start rolling down the incline on his path. I managed to catch it though.
Feel gutted for you.

That is gutting, feel for you.
It does seem strange if the incline was small, but these bikes do shake a lot when idling. Im sure you checked that the side stand was fully down? I'm really paranoid about this and so always give it a gentle kick to make sure it's down.

You're lucky its a GSA and not a Multistrada! A few dents and scratches on an adventure bike aren't too much of a big deal, although I appreciate it is brand new ....... !!

Same happened to me and the engine wasn't even running...slight scuff on the head guard and panier otherwise OK...lesson learned, never use the side stand unless on level ground or faacing uphill.

Rode out to Germany on a brand new 12GS felt like king of the road, there's no better feeling.

Parked it outside a friends house in mullenbach, chatting to them when i heard 'crash' bike had fallen over....

Couldnt find a reason for it?? sidestand not down? No, put it down to wrong side of the road/camber etc. Picked it up and cried... (scratched rocker cover, exhaust, broken indicator lense).

Rode back to the guesthouse in Nurburg, pulled up still feeling gutted, got off and 'crash' it fell over again.........

This time the rocker cover split, leaking oil, (nursed it home using tyre patch glue to stem the leak......)

Cried a bit more, got pissed......

Rode home, stopped for fuel on the M25 at 8 in the evening, went to start and ride out, EWS flashing on the dash, wont start now as well....

Dont have it anymore.....

No, but a bit of polish will he get rid of the surface rust and you shouldn't have any more problems

but by the way BMW say don't warm them Just get on and ride

Also for information sake Did you have it sitting on the stand for a left turn or as I suspect a right turn?

I have theory if you gonna park up on sidestand then you need the lock to the side the stand is on i.e. normal left side stand then left lock when parked up

If you have right lock and for some reason the bike moves forward it can drive off the stand

Look up K1200LT and sidestands I had one do it to me at the dealership with my boss looking on in horror ad the 1200 so gently rolled of the stand and onto it's side thankfully it was a trade in/used bike T924 PBL and no damage I loved that bike my mate bought it and had it 4 years

Now all my bikes get parked with the lock to sidestand side

I feel your pain

this is the result of a starting my 'bird before mounting & then standing on the gear lever instead of the side stand and watching it take off due to the high revs of a cold start thinking, "I really should be chasing that..."

I mentioned this on another thread about the lock when parking. It never made sense to me why people park the bike with it in full right lock (except rare situations) as it just looks unstable like this. Apply simple physics and it confirms this. Then after skipping through the manual it does say to have the bike with full left lock when parked on the side stand

Leave it in gear.

When i bought my first GS the sales guy told me that leaving it in gear was like having a hand brake. The best bit of advice I ever had regarding the GS.

When i bought my first GS the sales guy told me that leaving it in gear was like having a hand brake. The best bit of advice I ever had regarding the GS.

Those three quotes contain all the information you'll ever need. All my customers bikes get parked left in gear, and that's on a level sruface.
