ICELAND - A game of three halves

The mother of invention, desperation. Nice one.:beerjug:

I hadn't realised until after Tim's reply that dynamos have USB sockets now. I'm now less in awe as I thought, hence my original question, he'd fashioned something that take a feed to the lights and made an adapter etc.

It appears things have moved on since sturmy archer dynamos ..

You were certainly not alone in not knowing about USB's in bicycle dynamos, mine only has one wire - I bet our Icelandic companion Toddy has Bluetoth on his:D

Toddy's my hero, I bet he can divide by zero...

Third Half

Right then .......

First thing, I have far less photos of this half than the other two, partly down to some fairly miserable weather and a few very unphotogenic characters :D so when I've finished feel free to post your own pics and witty/informative/bollocks comments etc..............

At the bus station I'm sat on a concrete bench drinking coffee in the rain waiting for our intrepid heroes, just as I'm wondering if this bench could cause piles they arrive and after all the hugs and kisses  we get the bikes and head off on our adventure.....

But not yet!

Some of the bikes have a flat battery, our jump start packs will start the stricken bikes but their batteries are so low they won't continue to run, they need to have jump leads connected from another bike for a few minutes.... well would you 'f'kin believe it, Joe Narvey has some!
It's pissing down and I'm already drenched, "Jo, go down the road and jump start the Moon's bike but wait alongside him with the leads connected for a few minutes, no! don't try and ride alongside him with the jump leads still attached" :D

Heading out town taking the same route I took on the first trip we stop at Thingvillir before heading north up a gravel road, in places the crust had been loosed by a grader or dozer so while waiting a couple of minutes at the junction a few miles later "Andy 'dropping my bike's not an option' or the Warrington wanderer plus a couple of others seemed a long time in arriving.
Nipping back I find Andy who's taken a tumble, he quickly reassure me he's ok which of course was a relief and I think Rob the Taff had also been caught out.

We turn east and heading once more for the F35 Kjolur route, the sand catches a few out and I'm sure there's photographic evidence which should make an appearance.

Toddy leaves his rucksack in the prime place for riding off without it ..... (he didn't)

An Icelandic Ranger told me 4X4s should cross the river so slowly, the river should not know it was there :D

So I've been waiting for this !

Re: the jump leads, copies of my packing list are available if you PM me. If you too want to have your bike weigh the same as small dealership the PM me for the list. For the record though I jump started 3 bikes and 1 of those 3 times ..

Carry on

Well you can see from two of the above photos that with a bit of effort it is possible to make it hard for yourself :blast:D

I beg to differ. You can clearly see that my progress was impeded by a gentlemen performing early afternoon prayers ( Salat al-Zuhr IIRC)

Awesome Tim. You make it look like i actually know what I'm doing :D. Keep it up :beerjug:

Here's us getting ready to load the containers:

:D:D

A little time later, we all fly out to Iceland, mostly we all wake up and travel to the airport at silly o'clock so by the time we land we're all a bit tried and grumpy, but with a little bit of apprehension about the adventure we are about to embark on. You all probably know what I mean, a large group, are we all going to get on, will I be able to cope with the riding, will my bike be ok, do they sell beer ? that type of thing.
As it turned out everyone got on and mostly all the bikes were well behaved.

Apart from Simons GS Dakar that he's borrowed from "Gary" (I don't know who Gary is either), that bike slowly disintegrated before our very eyes. At different points in the trip he was told to; Burn it, leave it, let it float down the river, in the end it made it through, one smart arse even said to him "Simon, you could easily double the value of that bike", "How can I do that?" he replied, "you could always fill it up with fuel" was the witty retort.

The night before our flight I phoned my 18 year old daughter to say I'd ring & text when I could, she told me to have a nice holiday, I pointed out that it wasn't a holiday it was an adventure just the same as my trip to Morocco wasn't a holiday but an adventure. Her final words to me were "ok Dad", "enjoy your adventure with the 10 men you met on the internet"

Here's us at the Bus station meeting Tim.

Well as you can see from Joe's picture my bike wouldn't start. I'd left the Gamin in it's cradle and it drained the battery. First of all we used a booster pack which started the bike but without a charge at all in the battery as soon as the fan kicked in the engine stopped, happened a couple of times but I managed to leave the port and make my way up the hill towards the bus station, then the bike stops again. I can tell you I was panicking thinking I'd have to find a KTM dealer and get a new battery, then catch up with the rest the next day. Joe and Mark ride down, Joe parks his bike next to me and whips out his jump leads, 10 mins later I'm up and running with the battery slowly charging I didn't dare stop the bike. Joe gave me a jump again a couple of days later when I was charging my phone from the USB socket but I'd hit the high beam at the same time (what a nob) :homer
