ICELAND - A game of three halves

An easy day and we camp early in the same spot as a year ago at the beginning of our ride to the Westfjords.

It gives me chance to think....where to tomorrow? :)

Chatting with a couple of young German families who are cycling around Iceland and it seems one of the women's luggage didn't turn up at the airport, so no sleeping bag etc. etc.!

They needed to call the airport but their phone was flat and the only way to charge it was from the dynamo on his bike. He'd made some sails from Gaffa tape on the spokes but at the moment there wasn't quite enough wind.

I did suggest he cycled to Keflavik airport and back to charge the phone then they could call Keflavik when he got back:D

We plugged his phone into my bike but later the wind did pick up enough to get a charge from his dynamo :clap

Tim,
I'm in awe of the ingenuity of the cyclist and the Dynamo. Was this something he made or is it a kit of some sort? No, I'm not missing a gadget, I'm really impressed he managed to make this assuming it wasn't a kit from halfords.

Loving this RR Tim. Been offline for the last 10 days as the wifi on the island only worked for about an hour on one day, but home now so I can read it properly. Would go back in a heartbeat!

Hi Lee
We have 8 riders booked for next year, would you like to join us :thumb
Regards
Mark

I can't commit at this stage Mark as hoping to go on a big family holiday to the USA in July - but I'm down for Morocco 2017 and should definitely be able to make that trip.

Just strips of Gaffa tape to make the sails.

Our last full day's riding promises to be a good one.
The weather's fine and we intends to ride south along the Kaldidalur 550, it's an easy road nicknamed the "Highlands for Beginners" ..... the southern section which is pretty much a road, we rode again in a few days time in the third half, even then there were a couple of tumbles :D

Travelling inland from Borganes until just past Husafell where the road becomes a track, it turns south and skirts the Geitland Nature Reserve, we turn off to ride up to the Langjökull glacier.

The Langjökull glacier is the second largest in Iceland, in places nearly 2,000ft thick.
I was talking with a guide/glaciologist who told me of his concerns for the glacier's future, it's retreating at around 40m a year due to climate change.
There's simply not enough snowfall to compensate for the summer melting he tells me, he points to a spot a mile away which 100 yrs ago marked it's edge, he fears the whole glacier will be gone in 150 years.

But for now :)

It's a few years since I've seen a sight like this one!

We're having an easy day of it and simply enjoying the peace, quiet and warm sunshine so the following photos are just along the way.

Penny for her thoughts.......

After stopping for a picnic lunch (and tea) we camp at Þingvellir/Thingvellir and go for a walk.

Instead of going to the main tourist viewpoints we follow a small path cautiously making our way to the edge of the cliff and finding a great place to sit for a while.

Our last night in the tent and she's a happy girl.

We take a few tracks before heading back to Reykjavik, our friends are still at their cabin but generously allow us to use their house which is only a short walk into town.

The next day's spent enjoying Reykjavik and taking Ange's bike back to the the warehouse ready for shipping home with the rest of ours.

An early start in the morning to see Ange off and to meet the others for the third half.

Ange did suggest she changed her flight and joined us for the third half, I said yes you could but unfortunately you now don't have a usable rear tyre :green gri:D

Third half to follow :beerjug:

Without them, we only exist :)

I'll get onto the third half soon!

I dream with my eyes open... :)

That's why I luv all the trip reports...

For somebody with my disabilities tarmac is as much as i dare ride on & I get to go to so many great places through all the reports, piccies.

Not that most folk think about that when they post up..... ;)

The mother of invention, desperation. Nice one.:beerjug:
