Just something for you all to think about.
How high is the air intake on your bikes there will be lots of river crossings.

30 inches max on GSA

how deep are you thinking of going?

my concern now is if we are going to encounter anything deeper and my bike goes over in the middle and Hydro locking the bike

A fully kitted GSA is a big heavy lump to man handle out of a deep freezing river

then there is the kit in the paniers that will be drowned. some of it will dry of course but phones and cameras could well be junk after a fall in anything deeper?

sleeping bags wont be dry for the evening camp?

most of my stuff will be in kriega waterproof bags or a large 'overboard' waterproof bags but stuff will get soaked.

all bullshit aside I have genuine concerns regarding this element of this trip.

I don't want to trash my gear on this trip

does our route really have to take us through deep water. you guys on your gazelle like KTMs may not have a problem but I understand there are a few larger heavier bikes going on this trip

I think generally speaking we need to cross rivers if we want to see Iceland properly, I'd say that we will judge every crossing as we come to it depending on weather, bike, route options. Phones, laptops etc dry bags are your friend.
Don't stress too much it's an adventure trip. Speaking from experience only take what you really need but ultimately can live without.

These guys went last year, I wouldn't for a second believe they will take us anywhere that may be either bike threatening or life threatening.

I've done a bit of reading up on the crossings, there are two types, rain rivers and Glacier rivers. Glacier are the more dangerous due to snow melt, particularly later in the day, obviously rain rivers can swell after recent rain fall.

Cross at the widest parts they say. I've also watched loads of youtube vids of bike crossings and only one have I seen I've thought was a but concerning.

I should also add, if anything looks to me far to risky, be it to bike or life, I won't be crossing it, but I'm well up for the challenge :thumb

This is a "off road " adventure trip the routes have been well researched, there will be rivers to cross.
Pack light, use dry bags and bin bags for your kit, lap tops Leave at home.
River levels depend on the weather conditions.
If necessary we will walk the bikes across the river.

Guys, a serious question. Riding gear will get wet. Though I have Gortex clothing and boots, nothing can stop water from entering your boots if you're standing in water or even walking across. What are your recommendations on this? How do we manage that?

Ok
No worries then.

Andy, don't worry if it's too deep for GSA you will have company as we can chat together whilst we wait to be rescued :)

With regard to walking bikes through River, I found waking alongside the bike and using clutch to control pace an interesting exercise in the ORS course. Perhaps I need a refresh before we go paddling

My option number 1 is to recite some religious stuff and try part the waters like Moses.

Option 2 is ride to spindle depth.

Option 3 panic, wonder what on earth I was thinking when I said I wanted to go and then go cylinder head deep.

Option 4 walk with bike through river

Option 5 walk away from the river and ride to the nearest 5 star hotel.

No chance.

I'm guilty of missing the point and cut pasting service tools instead of field repair tools ( duck tape and cable ties).

Guys, when we do the pre trip meeting I suggest loading your bikes with all you intent taking to on the trip.
We'll do some easy river crossings and will help you with various techniques, hopefully then any concerns will have been addressed :)
