ICELAND - Big Bikes - It’s an adventure not a holiday!

The next day, we dropped the luggage off the bikes as we would be returning to the campsite later that day and made our way ‘delicately’ out on to the trails.

The weather was perfect so we retraced our steps from the previous day to take in the views we had missed due to the low cloud.

Tim took us through a lava field.

And then on to the coast.

Finally climbing up and over a pass with spectacular views.

And fish & chips for lunch.

After lunch we had a dash back to the campsite via road to pack up the tents and catch the ferry to the Westfjords.

Off the ferry, we headed out along the peninsula to the next campsite for the night.

Another really enjoyable day with the weather playing its part.

Nice one. A brilliant place to visit.

A few more pics of the first couple of days.

The camp was quiet in the morning.

We packed up the bikes and headed out towards some cliffs to see Puffins.

Shortly after joining the main (gravel) road Tom had an off and was high-sided from his bike.

Fortunately Tom was OK but was obviously in some pain.

Within a few minutes a car stopped and a Polish guy approached us and explained he was a medical student and offered to help. He confirmed what Tom already knew - a broken collar bone!

f7505af6ee8f02397354d8439fc42111.jpg

The Polish guy very kindly took Tom to the nearest town in his car, accompanied by Kevan following on the Yam.

We regrouped, sorted Tom’s bike which had a couple of light scratches only and made our way to the town. Lampo rode Toms 1250 and Garry took him back for the 640.

We were all relieved that Tom was OK and reminded how quickly things can go wrong and that it could happen to any of us.

Tom found his way to a medical centre, was x-rayed which confirmed the break, given some pain killers and then joined us at the town’s filling station come cafe.

We waited while Tom and Tim made arrangements for the bike to be recovered to Reykjavík and for Tom to fly home.

During this time, Garry decided to fill his bike whilst his helmet was resting on the mirror, the helmet started to fall and what followed was a slow motion balancing act of juggling his helmet with one hand and trying to keep the bike upright with the other, the end result is below - much to the amusement of the watching group! No harm done.

Once the arrangements were finalised, we left Tom in good spirits (considering the circumstances) and made our way to the next stop.

Just a couple more scratches on my bike and helmet,. I visited Tom after leaving the airport taking tim to his for his van. He's in good spirits and hopefully seeing a doctor again next week at the hospital. I should be able to get his bike back to him when I pick mine up. I'll sort some more pics later.

Shit news for poor Tom (Smug on here)

Recover well fella and if you need me to help with bike collection just PM - I owe Tom a favour from last year!

The scenery continued to impress.

We stopped at the self-service counter of a fish processing plant to collect fresh fish and fish soup for dinner with payment left in an honesty box. Tim had been before and promised the soup was worth the short detour.

It was then off to the next campsite, with the sunset lighting up the wall of the fjord across the water.

The fish soup did not disappoint - I’d go back just for that!
