ICELAND - Big Bikes - It’s an adventure not a holiday!

On the way back Tim routed us to the beach on the other side for a fag break where Mark found some very useful attachments for Wurzel
.... However this wasn't the last time we would spend some time on a beach that day

We left soon after and headed to a coffee shop with marriage cake in Flatley and the oldest bookstore for a mooch through the coldest tunnel in the world.
Looking forward to the easy day and Spag Bol for tea getting to the campsite we remembered the brilliant trail from here was 90 mins long and let's do it before tea.

As we zoomed off sliding the bikes around for fun the trail opened up in the fjordd round the cliff edge into an amazing view with the sun shining and seas calm what more could you ask for.

The trail was pretty remote right up until a young lady on a mountain bike came past them realized it's their norm.

But wait what's that 2 artic foxes in the road right in front of us so watch them scrabble up a cliff in front of us amazing however we can't tell Anna or Angela who have been dying to see them

We continue on looking forward to the Garlic bread starter when a sharp downhill bit to large pebbles means we are back on a beach, now if you have ever ridden on pebbles it isn't the best experience but when the rock face is on your left and the sea 2 foot to your right it makes an interesting experience.

After the narrow pebble bit we open up to the beach and beautiful sunsets with wildlife all around.

Now I do like to chill on a beach sometimes but when the path straight ahead is now waves and the path behind is more waves there is a certain sense of oh f?! @ anyway knowing that tides take upto 3 hours all we could do was to wait and hope it didn't get too much higher so Id put a marker to measure and just checked every 30 minutes or so and just wait it out. Some sunbathed whilst nice and warm some looked at their lives and wondered how it all came to this anyway I pulled my ipad out and watched 2 episodes of sons of anarchy.

By 930 I could see the tide was on its way out and decided it was time to get a move on so we moved all the bikes to the exit and waited some more patient that others and only when Gary had decided to walk the causeway we were ready. Anna was looking a little perturbed by being a pillion through the Sea but all worked out fine in the end.
So personally trail riding in the dark usually ends in tears for me but no where to sleep here

We took the short cut over the mountain and it would have been spectacular viewing but for it being just a tad dark.
1115 back to the site meant that spag bol had been suspended.

Sorry no pic of the exit maybe someone else can add it in

Mark found this after

That pic immediately above was the approach to the raised section of beach where we waited out the tide. Without that raised patch there would have been six very wet and salty bikes as the tide came up to the bottom of the cliff here! :D

We packed up following morning to again bright blue skies to what turned out to be a long road day to the isolated wild camp. The scenery is stunning the roads fantastic and then stopping for coffee and waffles, rhubarb cake and toasties at a old Icelandic house with views to die for, seals played on the fjord in front of us almost too ideal.
We followed round the headland where this sign stated the road ahead was just 4% so on with an extra layer for some or in Kev’s case inflated his lilo:)

Lampos interest in birds is quite varied and so far he’s see various feathered varieties and a few less feathered varieties but all of interest to his binoculars however when going into a bend at 60ish and the rider in front of you decided that he’s spotted a dove tailed eagle whilst coming to an abrupt stop mid bend makes for an interesting WTF.
Anyway the birds are great all of them:)

We carried on following Tim to the wild camp night when Wurzel decided to stop in the middle of the road and completely cut out luckily we were all together and Tim know of a restaurant not for away for a coffee so Wurzel had a Yam strap on for short ride.
Coffee ordered and Tim to investigate, now as it turns out we spent a couple of days sorting Wurzel’s issues out before the trip and left Lampo to fit a new battery unfortunately all those single vibes managed to undo both battery connections and blow a fuse. Anyway quickly sorted and fish soup then consumed for some which was excellent of course.

So with Wurzel given some new straw it was a 30 mile dirt road blast with some stunning scenery to the wild camp and what a great road that was.

Wild camping, Camp Lampo or beaching with Wurzul whatever you want to call it.
It's just a house in a bay that's just beautiful now strictly wild camping is a little misrepresentation from me there as we had 2 toilets and running fresh water so should be luxury camping

Wayfarer meals all ready the table quickly turned into a proper kitchen and all we're fed and watered, the rum (which I might add Icelandic rum is excellent) and whisky was all being consumed in merriment.
When the sun goes about 8pm ish all of a sudden it gets very cold so fed and watered most set about doing their own thing.
Seals and birds swam around the bay much to everyone's amusement.

The following day after a hearty wayfarer brekkie we set off to find the local spa where a big closed sign stood but strangely found others in there, piping hot water and bottles of chlorine around what could go wrong...
We piled back to the local shop where Lampo fell in love with a French man on his travels well a bromance at least purchased some bacon for the following day then off to the cafe opposite for the usual fish soup only 7-10 for that one I'm afraid
It's strange to think in this day and age that for 5 months of the year that village is completely cut off and a makeshift runway if formed. When the leccy goes off the whole village comes out to fix it no 50p meter here
Back to site for a 2nd night where Mark and Tim disappeared to worlds end

Wurzul's vibes had the better of Lampo by now so make shift grip puppies with some padding we're made

I know it’s a big ask but can someone from one of these trips post a map of which part of the country you’ve been to and if possible mark on there some of the routes you took? Ta.

It is a big ask :D although I'm not precious about the more obscure routes these forums are browsed by commercial operators taking years of riding and research as their own and simply follow a gps track with no historical knowledge etc ;)

But as many already know I often help with routes for those who contact me while getting ideas for their own trips. :)

The 'Fench man', was he serving in the shop and playing Sigur Ros at full volume by any chance? If so The Lovely Amanda bagsied him fist, shit I've never seen her so star struck :D

I can vouch for that :beerjug:

For the armchair adventurers that are watch enthusiasts, here’s a photo of Ian Anderson’s flute ( Jethro Tull). It was given as a gift to Gilbert O. Gudjonsson of JS Watch company.

His clients include lots of famous names so it seemed only right and proper that we visited, had the tour ..

Aah, fairy nuff. It was just to get an idea of which part you were in and how much of that part you were exploring. I have no idea of the scale of where you are and how much you cover on your trips. Just a big circle would do! :D

This trip focuses mainly but not wholly on the West Fjords :beerjug:

You will have to be more specific on the lovely Amanda as i know several lovely Amanda’s :)

So after the pool day it was back to the wild camp for some more Icelandic rum and Whisky and to watch a calm sea whilst the sun sets.

The following morning bright and early start from the worlds most annoying alarm clock called Lampo who when was up first would stand by my tent and shout louder and louder WILDER WILDER WILDER to the tune of BULER BULER BULER until i got up and made him some coffee of which i was in charge of ( i know what to get him for Christmas)

So we packed it all up and headed the usual 30 miles back towards the the local town on the rapid fire tracks stopping for a rolley with Tim at the views which were nice and clear with the sun shining what could go wrong.

We roll into a new town to us for some more marriage cake:nenau or chocolate cake in what can only be described as the witches cafe with strange T shirts and books on elves:eek:

Wurzul by now had Lampo in something called bend over dog mode or to you and me fucking back ache so given the usual opportunity to do some doggy syle on the grass wasn't to be wasted

Fuelled up to roll on we started to head inland towards the next nights camp through the fast twisting roads when we hit the M25 well the Icelandic ring road anyway some went for food, Tim got the biggest bowl of chips I’ve ever seen to which Gary eat most of when up rolls a trendy Icelandic beard.
So who is he well turns out he is Biking Viking and runs the off road tours for BMW so straight to it Tim gets the local road gossip and I ask about the GS trophy rumour coming to Iceland to which it seems is confirmed subject to COVID in 2021 and a few Pavey stories thrown in for good measure:augie

We left for the hills speeding along the M25 and eventually came to a bridge for horse petting well thats what happened as we moved off again Wurzel decided he didn’t want to play anymore and proceeded to do Fuck all:comfort

So stripped down and ready to go nowhere Tim eventually showed Lampo how to jump the 640 with the panel off there is a gif below of what it looked like to everyone else

After getting going a new site wasn’t too far away with river rapids, a bar and restaurant :bow which we didn’t use just the nice warm kitchen nearby:thumb
