I'm very interested to hear your opinion given you already have a 'baby' KTM.

In all honesty the white thing doesn't appeal to me but that orange thing, oooooh baby!

Andres

white one for me, b ut the other one is nice too.

there was one down at poole quay last night & he'd had the wheels done in that radical orange/white that the concept bike had, but they bottled in production :)

White one for me when I don't want to go off road any more. But for the moment ...... :D

Well had mine since Saturday, still running it in but my god I love it. Not sure if the wind protection is as good as the GSA, but it's the first bike I have owned that I don't want to rip the screen of and put something bigger on. Oh and have I mentioned the power, it's totally addictive.

I think we all know the answer to that! ;)

Andres

You are more than likely right but I am not so sure. I rode an 1190 when they first came out and thought they were superb. Up until recently I owned a F800GS and then last weekend had a go on a Tracer and was surprised how good it was, it felt like a rocket ship compared to the GS and I thought it was similar to the 1190 Performance wise but my memory may have faded as regards the 1190. It is the price of the Tracer that appeals and as DavyF has ridden them all recently it would be interesting to hear his thoughts.

I rode the SA first for about four hours. It's amazing how different it is from the 1190. The screen and bigger frontal area makes it way more comfortable for (fast) cruising/touring. The screen is a vast improvement and even though I haven't received my new MRA VarioScreen, I'm already thinking that maybe I should have ordered the bits and pieces to alter my own 1190.

The power and way this thing gathers speed is amazing. It was lifting the front wheel in the first three gears and even under hard throttle in fourth, the wheel was hovering off the Tarmac ! If you think the 1190 is ballistic, the 1290SA is in the next league. And the torque....... It's all you could ever reasonably need. The engine is smoother than the 1190 too and the heat issue has been sorted with the rear exhaust wrap and small heat deflector thingies.

The suspension is a revelation. I played about with the settings and it was just brilliant. The way you could be in comfort mode, then go crazy without the suspension tying itself in knots as it adapted to my throttle inputs, well, no one will be disappointed. The weight of the bike has been well balanced and it feels so light on its wheels that it doesn't feel much different to its smaller brother.

The menus are slightly different, better integrated I think and the cruise control is so easy to set and use. Some people have complained about the CC being on the throttle side, but I found no difficulty in using it, so either I'm a genius or they are feking idiots.

Comfort-wise, it was fine for the time I was riding it, although I believe my comfort seat on my 1190 is better than the standard seat supplied. The ergos are virtually identical, so no complaints there.

The only thing I am not fond off is the colour. I'd like more orange in the paint scheme and I prefer a shiney finish rather than the satin/Matt finish they've employed. But that's it and colour scheme aside, anyone lucky enough to be waiting on one is not going to be disappointed. You lucky lucky barstewards !

As for comparing the SA to the Yamaha Tracer. The Tracer is lighter and much cheaper......the end. :D

Is the 1290 SA worth the premium price ? If I could get away with it, hell yes ! Will I be rushing out to change ? Damn no !!! As much as this bike is another leap forward, my 1190 does all I need and more. At least that's what I'm telling myself over and over again. :comfort

Now as for the 1290 SuperDuke R, I could use loads of expletives and clichés about it being named 'The Beast' and how manic it is. And they'd be quite appropriate as this is one lunatic of a machine ! It feels so light, so flickable, so powerful, so.........you get the picture. There's enough road tests out there now without me going over what has already been written. I suppose what I really wonder about is how good the Aprilia Tuono V4 is as it always seemed to get the number 1 slot over the SD R in several magazine head to head road tests. The KTM is bonkers brilliant and perfect for a day of crazy antics, right up to when the rozzers take your license away for a very long time !
I'd love one, as a second bike. :bounce1

That seals it... I was looking at an X-Creen or the full MRA Vario screen but have been hovering over ordering the parts for the 1290 screen.

After that writeup I think I'm going to go for that as it looks the bizz.

£123 for the screen and support brackets, or £234 including the new screen mask with bigger side deflectors and the one handed adjusment mechanism..Tricky one. I think I'll kick off with the screen and see how it goes but I'm tempted to go the whole hog with the screen to be honest.

Jumpjim

could you please me me any details you have re the screen and adjuster as Id love to order this lot
My dealer says its not possible to do !!

Thanks Rob

When I was at the bike show I asked the ktm bods if the 1290 screen would fit the 1190. They weren't sure and promised to email me a reply ... Which they did!
The answer was no, you couldn't just swap screens, whether you can swap all the ancillary brackets to make it fit or not o don't know ....

I've ordered from Trevor Pope Motorcycles on their online parts fiche.

You need to select 2015 / Adventure / 1290 Super adventure, then click on "MASK FENDERS" under section 08.

The part numbers you need are:

1 - Windshield EU (60408008000) x1 £98.34
3 - Special Screw M5x12 (69008021160) x4 £6.00
50 - Windshield Adapter L/s (60408008060) x1 £9.66
51 - Windshield Adapter R/s (60408008061) x1 £9.66

I've ordered them this morning. Just have to see if they turn up now! 5-7 day lead time apparently.

I'm also tempted to get the whole screen adjuster and 1290 screen mask but I may leave that for the moment. That's about another £130.

Giles... I can guarantee thats bollox.. You just need the windscreen brackets. Apparently it won't adjust all the way to the bottom as it hits the screen mask.

Ooooooo!! Well that's good to hear! I may have to come and test ride your bike :)
I'm ok with the little black fly screen for the mo, but will look for something larger for a two up trip to corsica later in the year ....

Just ordered it all from the Jersey boys Did the same ordered the screen and the adjusters £116.00 Delivered by next Saturday !!

Nice write up.:thumb I agree about the colour of the SA, not enough orange. Maybe they're going to paint the R version orange when it comes out (which it will;)).
