If not an F800GS then what would you ride?

Why not look at the F650 twin?

A bit more road orientated with 19" front wheel instead of the 21". The same engine although lower state of tune and more of your farkles are likely to fit than any other machine. lower seay height as well and will cope perectly well with the odd unmade road.

There is also the small matter of it being a cool £1,000.00 cheaper:)

let us put it another way. BMW are not getting my money again. I fell out with them. and it wasn't finance related. It was an internal email that accidentally got sent to me but was intended for another person at BMW. Needless to say I went F'ing ballistic.

650 single... :thumb2

cheap, reliable, got two wheels what more do you need...

I'm also strangely attracted to small trail bikes at the moment I'm sure it'll pass with time...

Now you are talking. I spent last spring in the way of a G650 Xchallenge and was impressed what it could tackle. It could certainly tackle more than the 800 could. I'm not looking at the XT660 Tenere having read the following thread.

You wouldn't expect a VStrom to be just as good as an 800GS for half the price, but if its half as good, then surely you're quids in...

for the price of the 800 I could have a V-strom and Tenere. That way I don't have to compromise. The Mrs can come out and do the touring and I can do the commuting and shopping on the strom and then head for Africa on the Tenere. :beerjug:

You are right of course but the OP had to sell his bike to juggle finances at a difficult time. I was meaning that he could get most of the benefits from a cheaper bike and that it might even be better suited to the intended use.

Mind you if he sells all those farkles he could probably buy a new bike for cash:D

that's given me an idea. The "Everywherevirtually UK farkle tour 2010". I ride around the dropping off Farkles for cash.

i just made my choice - 660 tenere.

I'm seriously leaning in this direction now. :thumb

Farkles

can I have first dibs on, well everything. I know it'd be a short tour, but Scotland is lovely, and I'm willing to give you a room and a bike shaped space in the garage for as long as you need to see the one or two nice roads we have here.

I see you want the option of occasional fire roads, but if 90% of your time is long distance/sometimes 2 up then surely that should be the focus of the bike?

Dunno how good the Tenere is at long distance :nenau

But if I was in the market for a bike right now, it would be a KTM 990SMT. Fantasic bike :beerjug:

Everything I have read about it has been brilliant bar the lack of a fuel gague and the all or nothing throttle. If I had the money (which I don't) the Multistrada 1200 would be top of my list right now.

The plan is a two bike affair :D Tenere for me alone and perhaps a v-strom 650 for me and the Mrs to do the touring stuff. She is not into doing mega long days. I did a ride from Manchester to South Wales, then Devon and back and it pretty much put her off for life. :augie

My Mrs won't ride two up which is why she now has a sensible bike (Honda Transalp) and I have a BMW :D

I tried getting her to ride as she wont drive but she says it scares the crap out of her. That said she'll happily go for short blasts on the back of my bike and says "faster, faster" :nenau

I've been thinking about selling my 2 bikes to get an 800gs, but have now decided that 2 is better than 1, lucky for me my wife has no interest in bikes. :thumb2 So 1 for kicks and 1 for everything else. :D

Next year different ball game .. early adaptor of rumoured new Triumph Cub?

So am I the last one to hear about the Super Tenere or is it pretty new?

http://www.yamaha-motor.co.uk/products/motorcycles/adventure/xt1200z-super-tenere.jsp

seems like a nice bike!

anyone seen the Hitler vid? :augie

Just pulling your chain Sam. I have to admit I quite like it. But it has quite a price tag. In the region of 13K. It's also heavy and has lots of electronics that could go wrong.

Personally I wish they'd gone down this route for the Super Tenere...
