A friend of mine, who I haven't managed to persuade to join this forum yet, has an R1200GS that's developed a strange habit:
it's also started doing a thing where when you turn the ignition on it just sits there for 30-60 seconds and *then* turns the ignition on.I'm slightly worried that this may be a problem with the instrument cluster, and that's £750 for a new one.
… and then:
The ongoing saga of my starting problem... I got & fitted the new solenoid. My expectations were this would either:
a. Fix the problem. or
b. Not fix the problem, or
c. I'd fit it wrong and stop the thing working altogether.

Instead, what it's done is made the problem slightly better. I've still got the same issue, but the time between turning the key and the ignition coming on seems to have been reduced to just a few seconds, rather than 30-60.

I'm not sure how fitting a new solenoid made any difference, but what do I know? My theories are dodgy wiring or a dodgy capacitor somewhere. I think he needs to take it to an auto-electrician, preferably someone who knows their way around a motorbike. Any recommendations in north-east England? (Alternatively, other suggestions for potential fixes.)

I don't think this is anything mechanical that can be fixed (such as a loose wire etc or dodgy connector) as its the same everytime

I would say a module or the display itself has the issue which would mean its unlikely it can be fixed so will need a replacement. The hard part will be seeing which one! (though can he plug into the canbus system and look that way?)

Hmmm, don't think so. He did have some trouble with a flat battery recently, but I lent him a charger and it's been fine since.
It most certainly does, but it has the weird round connector and not the newer one like on cars and the R1250GSA

Ignition microswitch dirty?? unlikely but its the first thing that needs to work in the whole process
In one :) The grease in the microswitch hardens and makes things stick

If its an early unpotted version - remove open the microswitch and go to work with a cotton bud & Iso

I replaced my 2006 unit to be on the safe side - same symptoms & a busted wire in the head stock

New units are potted
