ignition setting gs

be glad it's not Italian;
for 'Left' and 'Right'
Guzzi refer to 'Sinister' and 'Dextrous' :D

how do you set the ignition after rebuild???
Problem using timing strobe on GS PD, is they a specific timing strobe light for my GS. I've tried a car type but it does not light up the marks enough to see the letters on the flywheel....

Any helpful info would be appreciated

I painted the lines and letters with a fine brush and white paint.
I have a snap-on jobbie and can see them well.

Painted them white but all I can see is a white blur when engine is running. Would a timing light that takes power from the battery work any better. The strobe I have at the moment connect to the spark plug and plug lead???

Yes, Yes, Yes :thumb.

I have two timing lights - the one that is powered from the plug lead is next to useless on my bikes (but seems to work on old cars :nenau).

The other has a 12v input and a sensor that clips around the plug lead. It works fine - but its best to run it off a separate battery, not connect it to the vehicle it is testing (charging pulse, in time with the spark can upset it, it seems).

I timed my 100GS the other day after changing the timing chain - no probs - nice steady 'Z' mark :thumb2.

If you want the details, I'll go and dig it out of the back of the workshop :D.

Mine is a 'Clarke Diagnostic Inductive Timing Light, with dual beam - model 97F. I see from the faded label that it cost me £25.95 back in the dawn of time.

It is no longer listed on the Clarke website (nor is any other timing light :blast), however Machine Mart have a Gunson 77008 that looks very similar:

http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/p...-feature/path/automotive-diagnostic-equipment

Price now up to £48.29 though :blast

I have other Gunson test equipment and find their stuff works well.

I think its worth getting a good one.

A Google Search produced a few more possibilities . . .

£41.35 inc VAT at tooled-up.com:comfort

Have you tried it on another bike or car?
Does the trigger work, if it has one;)

What kind of plug leads are they ?

My 100GS has yellow "Hotwires Silicon High Performance" leads on the top plugs (:nenau they were on it when I bought it), whereas, when I fitted the second coil for the 'Twin Plug' set-up I used normal Copper-cored leads for the lower plugs.

I get much better timing-light results from the copper-cored leads.

Plug leads - you need to get the Black BMW ones - yellow ones look sh1t, (you know that it is true!)

On mine, the induction pickup clip has to go on the correct way round - it says "This side towards plug" (or similar).

Is yours the same ?

Edit: has the light ever worked ??? try it on another vehicle and see.

I have (had) 100 metres of black HT lead, plus a load of connectors and rubber covers (thanks, Vehicle Wiring Products :thumb2 ).

I have thought about replacing the upper leads.

I thought the yellow ones went rather well with the fork legs, seat & tank :augie .

Think I'll leave it until after the Wee-Kend, no doubt there will be pish taken :D .

Good point, never thought of looking at that, good tip thanks...:comfort

Mine is also a bit strange this way. I did find that if I connected it to the bikes battery ,It would not work. Connect to a seperate battery and it worked fine.
