Hi all,

My bike (2007 gs) is still running after turning off the ignition.
I've disconnected the battery and wondered if anyone else has had this issue?

I'm assuming it's an ignition switch but I am clueless with bike repairs. I rang a bike shop near me who seemed reluctant to look at it :(

Appreciate any advice,
Rob

I had the same,

Its not the key portion, it will be the simple switch box at the bottom of the key barrel

easily removed with some small hex screwdrivers

you can either buy a new switch, or if your carefull open the old unit up and cleand and grease everything,

WWW.realoem.com will show you the part / location etc & a guideline price

If i recall, its one of the micro switches that will have stuck

use your kill switch to stop the bike running, the battery disconnect will kill the ignition an power to the switch

As above. A new switch is easy to fit. Mine cost about £85.00 from the dealer. Mine was doing the opposite though. Had to turn it a number of times before it would come on, it slowly got worse. Not had a problem at all since fitting the new one about 5 years ago.

How to remove the security bolts (if they are still fitted to your bike after nearly 12 years) was the topic of much discussion on this forum, when early edition 1200’s had failing ring antenna problems and / or the micro-switches were packing up.

If yours still has the security bolts and / or assuming they have not been butchered by past ‘careful’ owners (or even if they have) you’ll maybe find this old thread helpful:

Replace the security bolts with bog standard Allen bolts, nobody will know or care.

You dont have to remove the security bolts to get to the switch assy, its two tiny hex screws holding it on which are behind a plastic cover ( a further two hex screws)

If however it is the ring antenna, then it is the security screws

Fair enough. It’s a long time since I did mine.

Thanks for the responses, I can get to the switch via the tiny hex screws and have got the part number from realoem.
Now just have to buy/fit it!

Wish me luck!

Before you go and spend you can sometimes fix the unit, theres only a cam and two micro switches inside.
The cam is rotated from a lug on the ignition barrel, the lobes of the cam press the microswitches to give you the various ignition functions

What happens is, grease, shit, water get through the ignition barrel and run down to the bottom into the switch assembly

this gums up the microswitches and ... end result they dont work and the bike wont turn off.

The early units only had a clip in cover, so a small screwdriver will pop it out. then its just a matter of recleaning the innards and applying a small amount of grease to the cam pivots

The microswitches can be blasted with contact cleaner - iso etc. you just operate the switch over and over and watch the crap come out .

I cant rmember if you can open these micro switches - some you can , if so it makes ceaning and somtimes bending the small leaf spring inside to restore normal operation

replace everything, and use a screwdriver mimic the lug on the barrel and see if the ignition turns on and off. (making sure nothing falls out) !!

If its ok you can pop the cover on, and repeat fuctionality tests if all ok seal the cover edges with electricians tape and refit

If you get the new unit as a backup, you will see the microswitches are potted into place to prevent shit getting into them, this also makes it a bit more fiddly to refit.

then you have a backup :)

Thanks again for all your help!
Changed the switch today and working well again
