seem to have spotted a slight delay of my ignition cominin on once the key has been turned to on position, thought add ask know before it gets worse and am stuck at side of the road, any ideas cheers, it a 57 plate 1200 gs.

Mine has just started doing the same, at 53,000 miles on a June 06 bike..... except that it is not a slight delay, it's zero action.

As you will see from the attached video, it bizarrely came on momentarily when I turned it off. Several times I could not turn the ignition off, without turning it back on again.

I suspect that one of the pins / contacts has worn or worked loose.

Taking it in to BuMW on Thursday,,,, such is the joy of extended warranty.

Yeah - my 56 plate R1200R does it too.

You turn the key, and it seems to "wake up" in stages. First the parking lights come on, then the dashboard lights up, the clocks do their little dance, and it settles down and is ready.

If I'm in a hurry, and am holding down the starter button, there is a definite half a second or so delay between turning the key, and the starter firing.

When you turn the key to "on", it takes a half a second or so for the immobiliser to decide if everythings OK - and let you start it up.

Most modern cars do the same too - there is a short but perceptible delay before it bursts into life.

My 2007 GS does exactly the same... Was considering dropping into BMW for a look but I can live with at the moment. Been doin it on and off for about 3months now. Especially evident when cold i.e first thing in the morning.

I tried changing keys, not carrying spare key incase it was interfering, cleaning keys and genaerally fooking around with ignition to see if anything loose but nothing improves it.... having said that it's not getting any worse.... yet:eek:

Appreciate update Wapping from BMW on your fix....

BTW - ignition recall was done on mine already so not that either.

The new ignition switch is silky smooth. Makes me realise how rattly the old one had become.....

Look at the bottom of your ignition switch. There is a small black box with the smaller of the 2 wiring plugs that go to the switch. The box will be held on by 2 small torx screws. This box will need to be replaced as the 2 small micro switches inside have started to wear.
You don't have to remove the entire ignition lock to do this.
