I'm fed up with a NUMB- BUM?

Ive got one of Tony Archers creations on mine and it's brilliant...

What does the team think? :nenau

Have you tried padded cycling underwear...? I rode on a low BMW seat for the best part of 8 years before I got a Sargent last year. I never found the BMW seat to be that bad....:nenau

Yes Mike, I used my snow boarding pants but, apart from them being a tad sweaty, there just isn't enough space under my leathers. I also thought about getting one of those strap on air seat thingy's but I recon it would raise the seat height too much.

As I cannot afford a Corbin or a Sargent (even second-hand) I figured this might be a more ecconomical option.

Do you know what materials they use?

I can see how impact shorts that you might wear for snowboarding might be a bit of a push and a shove to get under your leathers but you would probably find padded cycling underwear a bit more comfortable.

Something like these but there are so many different brands, including those sold by Lidl and Aldi (Hi Giles.......

Interested to see how you get on.

I have the low seat and find there isnt enough padding so also trying to find time to get down there. :thumb

The Sargent & Corbins.

It depends. The Corbin on my VFR was leather. It was reminiscent of a horse saddle in lots of ways - no bad thing. My Sargent is ummm....it's a sort of carbon weave vinyl, I think. :nenau

Will be looking for something akin to the later, myself Mike as i intend to get the side panels and mudguard wrapped in a 3M vinyl carbon weave pattern.

Also included and implied in my original question;

....do you know what type of foam and its density they use or even gel-pads? :D

No but my arse told me the Corbin foam was really very dense, aided by the support of the leather seating surface. The Sargent is perhaps slightly softer. However, they're both much firmer than BMW's OEM seat foam. No gel pads in either and this isn't a bad thing. Apart from anything else, gel can freeze in sub-zero temperatures. I'm sure you'd find either a Corbin or a Sargent supportive enough.

However, Corbins are a bit more agricultural than Sargents. Turn one over and it looks to have been built by a blacksmith. Sargents appear much more productionised than hand crafted. Also the Corbin seat for the GS is quite wide which can exacerbate the seat height issue unless you are long of leg. I did look at Corbin seats in the factory / diner in Hollister CA way back in 2005 with a view to bringing one home but both the width and the weight put me off. Subsequently, I rode a borrowed GS fitted with a Corbin, in Oregon in 2008 and it was touch and go for me getting my feet down.

FWIW, I too had my GS saddle toyed with. I took it to Tony Archer and he spent some time talking with me and in the end I had gell pads fitted front and back, a slight lowering at the front and the rear seat shaved at the sides and a "fanny hump" fitted.
He explained that the biggest problem is that the front seat has minimal padding at the back of it and it can put a lot of pressure into the lower back. He was totally correct, the work he did was very good but it did not cure the problem completely.
Now ride an RT.
