I've receved a letter from my dealer today telling me there is a problem with the ignition imobaliser ring on my 07 gsa any one else had any letters or problems.

The phrase you're looking for is probably "EWS ring antenna", and yes.

A noticeable percentage of riders have experienced this problem (myself included), and there are repair campaigns underway replacing the part with a reengineered version.

As I understand it, the transceiver that handles the communication between the key's chip and the immobiliser on the bike, dies, and you can't start the engine. Your bike will not be in danger of failing on the move.

Do as it says in the letter.

Drop the bike in. BuMW will fix it, for free. All will be well. :thumb2

"EWS ring antenna"

They are changing them for free if you get a letter, I never had a problem with my 2007 GSA but they wanted to change it so just drop it off and an hour later you can ride away, whilst its there if you ask nice enough they might do any software updates that are outstanding :aidan

Hi
Most people that got the letter will also have breakpipe replacement and softwareupgrade at the same time.

i got same letter and called in for them to do mine...07 gs. took it to bmw at sunderland and it took an hour while i waited in there cafe area wich i might add was help yourself to coffee biscuits fruit pop etc. all free.had a bit crack to the lad who sold me the bike and had a look at all the new bikes.all the staff there are spot on and i wish the job took longer.

no letter

Hi,

For me.. no letter. Although I had a service booked for about a month and when I took the bike in a week ago they said it needed replacing and did it all foc.

Got the same letter and had mine done yesterday at ssp. Took about an hour. Roy also told me if this is the recession let it continue as they have never sold so many bikes. :thumb2

Hi,

You all mention pre 2008 1200GS & A's but are the 1200GSA 2008 at risk too? A some people are having the part changed without having received a letter, should I be concerned. I'm off to Spain shortly and have never had such little confidence in a bike. I've already broken down due to the fuel pump controller issue.

Thanks.

got my EWS ring done (ooh aah missus) before Christmas together with the brake pipe recall.. 07 GS

Depends when in 2008. Early (say to March/April - not sure of exact date) may be prone to failure. Later ones with the new part seem OK.

Suggest you borrow spare fpc from your dealer whilst you are away (or look at the workaround thread) if you are concerned. Now the antenna seems sorted, the fpc is the only real show stopper unless you are really unlucky.

Yeah, just don't get stuck in the coffee area on a sunny day at Boldon. The huge windows make it feel like you're having a day at Kew Gardens.

Also... every BMW dealer [1] these days does free coffee/tea (inc some funky flavours) and will have a few seats, a TV etc.

I wish BMW UK changed to a better tasting coffee supplier, Flavia's flavour sucks IMHO.

[1] for some reason over the past few months I seem to have visited far too many dealers in the UK from London up to Scotland.
