Hi all

I am trying to import some pdf files and save them on my iPad 4 (IOS 8.0.2). The files are on my PC (Dell Laptop with Win7 64Bit) and also on my MS One Drive.

I have tried sending them to myself as an attachment and then opening in GMail on the iPad. I can see the eMail attached files and open them no problem, also with the One Drive - via the iPad.

However, I don't see how to save the files on the iPad. I have tried via iTunes, but can't figure that out either, as presumably I am still in PC Mode.

Is there a 'Save Files As' type option hidden away in a hidden menu somewhere on the iPad? The IOS 8 Manual isn't terribly helpful and I don't see anything in this forum using the Search function.

I don't want to have to down load each time from the cloud, etc. every time I want to read the files.

Thanks for any help.

i save pdf into ibooks app on my mac, then sync to my ipad using itunes and view in ibooks there.

works great for manuals, magazines etc.

it is 'kin stupid using two apps to do one job, but that is the way apple seem to want you to do it. probably encourages people to buy more direct from itunes store.

I've got the Adobe PDF reader on my iPad and it works great. Email the doc to yourself and then open the PDF reader and open the doc. It can then be saved on the ipad (All be it via the adobe app)

I use Goodreader - which handles a lot of different file formats, and allows storage in custom folders.

first download a pdf reader from the app store. Then your ipad will know what to do with the files. Theres plenty of free ones.

Any .pdf files will save directly into iBooks on the iPad if requested ..... at least they do on mine

If you go to the apple apps store there's a USB for Ipad app that lets you transfer files from your PC to Ipad/Iphone. Just search USB in the App store it's free.;)

I am running Win7 and as far as I can see, there is no iBook app for PC op system.

Thanks for the replies re PDF Reader. I already have two PDF readers on the iPad. i.e. Adobe Reader and PDF Reader. They don't see my PDF files on One Drive or GMail when opened, so I must be doing something wrong?

Sounds useful. The USB SD Card Reader only allows transfer of photos I think and that is one way in bulk. Don't know why Apple insist of crippling even the most basic functions!

do any of your pdf reading apps have a file sharing entry like this when device is linked to itunes, because you can usually import files into apps in that way?

The one I use does pictures, docs anything, it's just a file transfer app.

If you have E mailed them to yourself and can open them up then there is an Icon That looks like a square with an arrow coming out of it (cant screen shot it at the moment) and if you click on that you should get the option to open in I books and be able to save it as a PDF in there for access any time and at the risk of sounding patronising, which I do not mean to be, ensure that you have the PDF tab on in I books so you can see what is saved

That's it - email to yourself - view attached PDF through 'Mail' on iPad - tap 'Send To' icon - tap Open in iBooks - PDF automatically saved in iBooks. Simples!

Thanks for the reply.

When I open my GMail in the GMail app on the iPad, the attachment is visible and opens to the pdf document when tapped. There are NO Apple Squares with the vertical arrow (I know which one you mean).

At the bottom right hand side there is a square with a curved arrow pointing at 3:00h. This gives the option of opening in Chrome, or Safari or Copy Link. Open in Safari brings me to the Google Mail page (after signing in) and there is a Square with the Vertical Arrow, which you described. However, there is no option to save in iBooks. There are Icons for Message, Mail, Evernote & More (optional LinkedIn, FaceBook, etc.), plus in the second row Add Bookmark, Add to Reading List, Add to Home Screen, Copy, Print and More (just the same options). No iBooks. EverNote doesn't show anything either, but I have never used it before.

Maybe this is Apple being childish and not properly supporting their arch rival Google's GMail. Will try with another eMail provider.

Strangely I did about a year ago manage to save the IOS7 and IOS6 manuals for the iPad but can't remember how I did this.

I suspect that the IOS software has had a brain fart and I will probably have to do some sort of reset. I naively thought it was just Windows that did this, however :blast. I may talk with Apple before I do this though, but I doubt they will be of much help.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far.

OK, I see the PDF Tab in iBooks, but there is nothing in there, not even the two IOS manuals, but they are visible in Books and in All Books. Again rather strange.

Only the USB for iPad has anything resembling this page unfortunately.

Thanks for the reply.
