Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to pass on my enthusiam for a route I used recently whilst travelling from Cardiff to Wrexham. I may be telling you what you already know. I don't care.

Many of you will know that the choices are usually between the A49 through Hereford and Shrewsbury, which is very busy and in England ; or the A470 and and A483 through Buith Wells and Newtown which is much better, but quite busy and heavily policed :(.

On the last two occasions I have travelled through Paincastle, Knighton and Clun to Welshpool. The first part from the A470 is up 4 steep hairpins and then into beautiful wild country along surprisingly fast single track lanes with passing places. There was almost no traffic, no coppers and no scameras.

From Paincastle the road climbs again through New Invention (I kid you not) to Knighton on Offa's dike. From there you take the A488 to Clun up a steeply wood valley of fantastic variety and involvement.

Clun is a tiny village of tiny roads with an even tinier bridge (Ok its quite small). The castle is worth a look and there is a tea shop I wish I had had time to try.

From Clun the road uncoils and speeds improve until you part company with the A488 and head towards Welshpool.

I did this first in early March when the weather was warm and Sunny. I couldn't stop grinning. Especially as the trip was paid for by the company dollar. Bliss.

If anyone is available during the week we might be able to travel together. I would be more than happy to show the way.

A GPX file is attached which I hope shows the route. Enjoy. :beerjug:

I use the 488 quite regular ... it's a crackin' road :thumb

But don't shout too long and hard about it or it will soon be full of crotch rockets, ambulances and police

Best way to ruin a good route, post it on a forum.

Even the Ring used to be good before Top Gear and the Brits.:blast

Great road until its wet, Lost of slippy shiny tar about.:D

yep, just as it was yesterday... but what a great day out... Chepstow, Usk, Aber, Builth Wells Welshpool, Shrewsbury, Knighton, Hereford, Chepstow.

483 and 488 in one beautiful days riding - with all 4 seasons showing up for some variety...
