Ok I 've got to be realistic .... Helga's not coming back and there's no way I'm going to be able to afford/insure another brand new GS after this debacle. rather than trawl thru Bikemart for the next 6 months I thought I'd ask the expert panel first.

So I'm looking at £5-6K. Will I be able to get a decent R1100GS for this? What's availability like? What should I be on the look out for (except the obvious, FSH etc).

Or should I take a time out from the GS world, buy a brand new Fazer 600 and come back in a few years ... can't believe I said that ....:(

Lesson to be learned from my experience - don't get too attached to yer bike .... it is only a machine after all.

If I say that to myself enough times I might even begin to believe it myself.:tears

Oh yes one more thing ....

.... the only bits unscathed after my crash were:

1. Remus Revolution titanium can and y-piece (bike fell onto offside)
2. Atomic dual horn
3. panniers (they weren't on)
4. touratech oil sump plug
5. touratech oil cooler cover

How many of these bits will fit a R1100GS? If the answer is 'none' keep an eye out for the 'For sale/wanted' board ...

I recently bought a '97 1100GS (75 anniv. edition) with 10,000km (import) for £6k. ABS, heated grips etc. etc.

Bought from Allan Jefferies, approved used BMW with 1 yr warranty, roadside assistance, blah blah blah.

Your panniers will certainly fit.

The opinons in this forum seem to reflect that there ain't a great deal of difference between the 1100/1150. I've ridden both and the only criticism of the 1100 is the gearchange is not as good as the 1150. Power and handling I can't tell the difference.

I was faced with the same choice, there's a lot of brand new bikes you can buy for £6k. 600 Fazer, 1200 Bandit ???

Nah, I don't think so. It's difficult to explain but once you've "bonded" with a GS, nothing else will do.

Start looking for a S/H GS mate, good luck.

Retro, I was at Colwyn Bay Motorcycles, North Wales, yesterday (01492 535959) they have two GS1100's.

One in particular caught my eye, in silver with the yellow band on the tank, low mileage, can't recall the price but I think it may have been £5,300 ish. I think the other was black...... or was it red.

In my opinion the silver one was gorgeous (for an 1100 :duck: ) and a far more feasible option than a Yamaha Fizzer wotsit as good as they are.

If you want me to take a look let me know.

Sorry to hear about your crash :(
But what about buying what's left
from the insurers, their must be something
left worth selling to put towards your next bike.

Thanks Gauloises. I've yet to have the formal 'thumbs down' from the assessor, but in my opinion (and the dealership) the bike is a total wreck and I doubt if much could be salvaged in all honesty ... but I'll bear in mind your suggestion ....

C&W in Dorset currently have 4 1100GS's advertised on their web site. All four of them have been there for a while (assuming they're still in stock) so they may be prepared to do a deal.

They range in price from £4k to £6k for a red/white anniversary model.

Look at www.cwmotorcycles.co.uk

Good luck

Imports

There is a thread going in the pub about imports. I posted up a number of prices for used bikes for sale over here in Belgium. From what I gather they compare very favourably against UK prices. I know a mate of mine is selling his black 1100 (UK reg) , I'll find out some more about it and let you know age, mileage etc - twat has gone and bought himself a Duke ST4S . He is selling his 916 and his GS for the ST4s - me thinks he needs some cash :p .
If you are interested in arranging an import I'll give you a hand from this side. I know the process for getting them exported , the transit plate and what you need to do nack in the UK. I'll even introduce you to some Belgium beers in the process
Think about it - it may be interesting.

Retroman,

I was at BVM in Stroud recently and they have a number of 1100/1150GS's for sale. I am going back there this afternoon to pick up my 1150GS from a 600 miles service. I'll note some specifics for you.

If your in Cardiff tonight for the Hein Gericke do, I can fill you in on the details.

Regards
