Inside of tank rusting

Hi

After another incident of getting a load of rubbish out of the petrol tank when I switched to reserve I have just drained my tank and removed the petcocks. It appears that the inside of the tank on my 1989 R100GS is rusting quite badly.

What is the recommended treatment for this? Is there an equivalent of getting the inside of the tank bead blasted and repainted I can get done?

Just a point - depending on the year and model - quite a lot of BM tanks were coated in a red/brown paint inside the tanks........after 20 years it starts to come off and appears as little red bits in the float bowls.

I sure you know rust from rust but I thought that I would mention it.

I take all my tanks off every year and empty them to get rid of any moisture that settles around the petcocks......I then swill diesel around the tank and leave them empty for the winter.

I have the red/brown paint inside the tank. This has bubbled and come off in places hence the rust. I looked on the internet a few years ago and the advice for over-wintering was have a full tank so thats what I have been doing. For some reason this is really hard on the fuel caps and they have been rusting to pieces in 5 years or so so my recent winter routine has been drain carb bowls, fill tank and replace cap with a plastic one.

Anyway I decided to give electrolysis a try. As of now the tank is full of a soda solution with a sacrificial anode and 12V across it. I am taking photos and I will report back. I am planning to use POR - 15 as a long term solution unless anyone on here has bad experiences with it.
