Wasn't sure where to place this so please move the thread if need be.

A colleague inherited a motorcycle, she doesn't wish to ride it but it does have sentimental value so she would like to store it in her garage. I've tried a couple of insurance companies on her behalf but none will cover it just for fire and theft. She isn't a rider so she can't really cover it for third party etc because she would need to hold a motorcycle license for it to be valid.

Suggestions please? If you know of a company who will insure the bike when stored please let me know.

Surely ...

... she could include it on her household policy as an 'Article of value' :nenau She may need a valuation certificate but if it's not to be ridden then I don't see why not :thumb

I mentioned this and her household contents policy doesn't cover motor vehicles. May be worth investigating this avenue further though.

What about the classic bike insurers? They must deal with unused bikes in storage or restoration all of the time.

Again worth a try, but the bike is probably going to be too young to qualify.

Thanks for the suggestion.

It depends on where she lives. Personally I wouldn't waste my money on insurance at all.

If there is a genuine concern that it will be stolen because of the area fine but otherwise just take reasonable precautions, ground anchor and v.heavy chain and pile up lots of useless junk in front of it so no-ones sees it if the garage is open.

If it's really sentimental keep it in the house as a display machine or dismantle it and keep it in the loft (if she has one) until circumstances change.

Ask about a 'Laid-Up' policy.

Most insurer's used to provide this. It covers for fire & theft but only while it is stored in the agreed location and manner.

I've had a few such policies over the years when restoring cars. My main reason was to keep the NCB going.

It used to be peanuts as most of the 'risk' is not present.

I've come to the conclusion that we can probably get a little too anal about insurance....I've tried a few companies and so far no joy. She's going to take a chance and keep it securely locked up in her garage. It's not as if it's an expensive piece of exotica so I can't imagine a prospective thief being that interested - 1996 Virago 1100 !!!

Thanks for the replies.
