Green Card Woes

Tim...many thanks for posting all this information. It is extremely useful.

Now my problem...two of us are travelling from Canada to Spain in March of '09. From Spain we will be taking the ferry with our bikes from Almeria down to Nador and will be riding in Morocco for approximately 1 week while attending the "Tuareg Rallye."

"Green Card" insurance is shaping up to be a bit of an issue for us. Canadian insurance is not valid outside of North America, hence "Green Card" validation is not possible from any Canadian insuance companies.

I have been in contact with Knopf in Germany who tell me they can supply us with temporary Green Card coverage for us in Spain, but not Morocco. I have also been in touch with the rally organizer who highly suggests that we find a way to secure the insurance before arriving in Morocco to avoid time delays in Nador.

I have read elsewhere that it may be possible to purchase temporary insurance and receive the correct documentation somewhere in the port of departure, Almeria. Is this true? If so...where?

We are also contacting EU insurance companies in an attempt to secure this insurance before entering Morocco. So far...no luck though, perhaps because we are Canadian residents.

If "worse comes to worse" and we cannot "pre-purchase" it before arriving in Morocco...does anyone have details of where to go in Nador to get it?

Anyhow...I managed to solve my specific problem. I found insurance through a vendor in the US, Motorcycle Express.

They can provide coverage from 1 to 26 weeks for US and Canadian citizens only. No help to EU residents I know, but it is the only place I've found here in North America so far that can provide it.

Posting here in case it is of help to someone else in the future. I didn't relish the thought of adding more time and complication to my Moroccan border crossing.

Green card

Lads, you're lucky in that you can get green cards from your insurance companies in the UK but here in Ireland I can't.

The problem is that the insurance offices at the Ceuta crossing are apparently closed. I don't want to run the risk of not being let in at all after going all the way there (after past experiences), and ideally it would be better to have insurance rather than chancing riding to Tetouan or wherever to get it (assuming I am let in).

Any suggestions ? Could I get a green card at the port in Tangiers and how much hassle is at that entry ?

Yes on a week day (European) From Trifa (Spain) to Tangiers, fast ferry no hassle at all, if you are prepared to wait,and wait. once you get there. Cost more to cross on the fast ferry but all the Police details are conducted on the boat so you get stamped with your number. Then you just Que to get the bike details and your passport info checked. There are Kiosks selling local money and insurance. See more detail in Tim's Knowledge section.

My insurers (Zurich Connect) have just issued me a green card for Morocco. I live in Switzerland and have Swiss car insurance - but Zurich connect are a global company.

When we entered Morocco via Ceuta last April the insurance 'office' was closed.

I acted dumb (it wasn't hard ) and asked the guy at the border where do I buy my insurance, he pulled me in close to him and said "excuse me sir, we don't talk about insurance here", I said "what about the police", he said "they won't talk about it either".... so I didn't pursue it any further

I've got green card cover for Morocco for trip end of March beginning of April via Norwich union. Also took out some specialist travel insurance to cover me for accident/sickness whilst off road on my bike via Cambell-Irvine. I once broke my wrist in the States off roading in the Sierra Nevada and boy was I glad I had this extra cover it saved me a small fortune.

Insurance at Ceuta/Fnediq crossing is still not possible. I believe there is somewhere in Fnediq just after the border, otherwise

Hi Tim,

given that we have not decided yet which crossing to take to Morocco and given that my insurance company will not issue a green card for Morocco, which crossing is the easiest to use to get insurance and where would we get it (assuming the above?). For reference we leave Plymouth on 5th April.

NIG Skandia, motor trade policy, brokers Ault Insurance, first call said no, second call suported by email with link to this very topic -"ooh, we'll look into that" Next day I get a call from Broker "No problem, how long are you going for?" I'm insured by Norwich Union via Aquote via Tesco website

It cost £139 fully comp (last Sept) for my new F800GS and they just added 4 weeks of Morocco to my policy for £44. Not sure if that was a good deal, more an FYI.

Another tip... add ya mates to your insurance from the beginning. It costs nothing extra (providing they have a clear license, etc) and could be useful on a trip. There will be an admin cost it you want to add them later.

One of my better moves was to get a Groupama policy. They paid up for the 1150 i left in Morocco (eventually) without too many questions, They also covered ambulance and recovery fees as promised

Getting 3rd party insurance at the border is one thing i'm glad i avoided.

World Wide Travel insurance did a good job under the circumstanses of the repatriation

After BMW and Hastings Direct told me they do not cover Morocco at all, I checked this thread and then went to Carol Nash who offered me European comprehensive bike cover through Norwich Union with fully comprehensive green card cover for Morocco at £18 per week extra. They also did personal travel insurance ... this includes Morocco as part of Europe for insurance purposes (since it borders the Med, according to the representative).

did not get coordinates but as go from Ceuta to Tetuan from the main road you pass two roundabouts and on the first crossroad with the traffic lights take right - 20 yards and second flor up and you there.
if lost find Malaga Hotel - insurance office is around 200 yards away (locals know the place)

Carol Nash are popping my green card in the post today for Morocco. No problems - Groupama Optima Motorcycle.
I have just renewed and got INCLUDED IN THE PRICE Axa roadside assistance and recovery for the UK and Europe. Also they are looking into adding Morocco into the recovery deal (i dont believe that one for a minute though )
SO insurance renewal was 180 quid fully comp protected, inc uk and europe recovery, legal and green card all in. Not bad cosidering i would have had to fork out 70 ish for the border insurance and 90 ish for the AA european cover.
Nice to have a rewarding experience buying insurance cover!

Is there such thing as break down cover for Morocco?

I ask as 'Europe title' covers Morocco for my Carol Nash Travel Insurance and some Bike Insurances, Morocco is also included in the Europe title, so why not Break down! RAC don't do it, so who does - just in case you understand.

yes in theory......spanish policies cover morocco and list breakdown cover as included but in practice
best bet is make sure you have a few numbers with you .....peter at biker's home in ouzazarte for example, mine if i'm down there on a trip with the support truck etc.

there are no national breakdown organisations in morocco
