Insurance Rip Off with Devitts / Mottorad

Got my car renewal quote last week (NFU) and noticed there were two drivers on the policy who never drive now.

Asked them to remove them and the premium went up!

How does that work? Reduce the risk and the premium goes up.

I was told by an insurance broker that if there is more than one driver on the policy if your driving a long journey the driving can be shared so less risk of tiredness accident

With Insurance Companies the reason why more drivers on a policy means it costs less, is because statistically you are less likely to suffer alien abduction if the policy document has more named drivers and so less likely to make a claim on your insurance ! Makes as much sense,

In truth Insurance Companies and Brokers are a law unto themselves , their aim is to charge as much as they can get away with to make maximum profits and to pay out as little as possible at the other end .

We have to have insurance, so they know they have those of us who are law abiding by the short and curlies , shop around

Just remember if you state your bike is garaged at home at night, if it gets taken from your drive your not covered for theft! Even if you've just got home.

I always check for alternative cover and check the prices and terms. Been with the same insurer for 3 years now but always get an alternative quote and then go back to them and ask them to match it - every time they have done it so far but i know this wont last for ever.

Did i read it correct that someone said they have to ring their insurer to tell them when they will have their bike parked at hotels - I am very sorry but if this is the case you need to change insurers - how the hell will you be able to tour?

I think this might be true.

I've been insured through BMW Motorrad (Red Star/Devitts) for years. I added a second bike on the policy a few years back and we had to go through again the "parked in a garage at night" thing, as the bikes are in two different locations.

I wish I recorded the phone conversation because it was delirious/hilarious at some point.

The "traveling" bits for the policy are not indicated on the paperwork that gets sent home. So I asked what happened if I had the GS stolen while on vacation and clearly not at the garage near my home in London.
– "It will be covered if you're traveling sir".

– "How do you specify if I'm traveling? Do I have to be out of the UK for some days? Do a 2 days trip to Norfolk goes as "traveling" or is it just dogging? Do I have to call you guys?"

Also, at the time I didn't have night time access to said garage. So I asked what happened in case I returned from a week long vacation from France at night and had to park the car outside my home for one night only?
Will that last night be still considered traveling or not? Would the bike be covered? Would just the excess apply?

Response: "I don't know sir".

Mind, insurance is a business like another. I understand their requirements and all... but when I have to shell a couple grands on the phone for my policy I'd rather have some more clarification on stuff like this... :D

Its a condition of their policy.
I thought it was only if you declared that you had one.
I have one and i use it and i declared it so reduced cost by a couple of pence.
Thanks for the info though, i will have another read of the policy.

From what I've been told by various insurers used so far, if you declare it, it should be on.
So you can declare the bike as parked "on the road" with nothing on, pay a bit more, if you want and that's it. Nothing should affect the fire/theft policy.
