Insurance

I spoke to a BMW dealer about insurance and he said the alarm gets you a 2.5% discount. The immobiliser is worth a 7.5% discount. That's with BMW insurance obviously - I think other insurers won't accept the 1200's alarm as it doesn't arm automatically. Which in my view is a good thing, my girlfriend has an alarm on her bike that arms after 30 secs, every time she fills up with fuel the damn thing does off!

Talking of BMW insurance, I seem to remember someone on here saying they added a non-BMW bike to their policy, but the dealer I spoke to said this isn't possible. Who's right?

I managed to get my old GT550 added to my BMW insurance policy. It seems they will except another non-BMW bike if it is valued under £3K.
P.S. the BMW alarm can be made to trigger automatically, but you need to go through the programming mode with the key-fob.
The default setting is auto-trigger off.

The plot thickens - I dug out the 1200GS brochure and phoned the "information hotline" number printed on the back. I asked them about the BMW insurance scheme and they gave me a different number to call.

So I rang that number, and eventually got through to ... Devitt Direct! Who, guess what, DIDN'T HAVE THE STUPID BIKE LISTED ON THEIR STUPID COMPUTERS.

grrr... :bash

Oh geez.... What a world...

I was quoted £300 something by the dealer, that's with a pretty good post code, garaged, 31 years, 2 years UK NCB (don't know if they take my 7 years foreign). Future bike will have alarm and chained to ground anchor...

Mouse,

I would give SPC and ring and talk to the lady that does the insurance quotes. They were extremely helpful and efficient.

I'm with BMW

But only because like Mouse couldn't get a number of insurers to either quote, as they didn't have details or in the case of many they would nt accept the BMW Immobilser as it was not on their list of Thatcham approved immobilisers.

I got rather hacked off being asked to fit a 2nd "approved" immobilser or "they" couldn't quote.

Anyway BMW were cheaper on the 1200 than may previous insurance for a ZX9. Adding my Gilera 180 runner cost a whopping £10 to the premium.

Allan Jefferies arranged my cover when I collected the bike in July. £230 FC with £250 excess via BMW. Most others did not at that time recognise the model and so would not quote. A couple were in the £4 - 500 bracket so no contest. Age 55, located in NE, clean licence.
Give Jefferies a ring, it's free.

Comprehensive: £282.00 with an excess of £350.00. This includes protection of your No Claim Bonus. Legal cover is also included.

ANOTHER BIKE?

I got my KTM Adventure added onto the back of my BMW insurance when i had my R1100S, cost me another £70 to insure 4.5K worth of bike.... Beat That!!! Mark ;0)

A HAPPY ENDING!

Hurrah for BMW :D

I spoke to the peeps at Southport Superbikes and got a quote from BMW insurance for £628 - and that includes the Fazer on the same policy! Adding the Fazer cost 35 quid, what a bargain.

Bike arrives in 3 weeks ... can you say "impatient"?????

ummm.... 22 days till my bike should arrive... and a week or some for it to be put together...

Mr Smug from Smugsville here. Living in deepest Wales does have its compensations, then. BMW insurance £157. Carole Nash (like otehrs, tried to quote me for a 1200C YUK) after referring it came up with £350 or so. Do I win the Cheapskates prize?

Mouse, can I have contact details please.

Mine arrives in EIGHTEEN DAYS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and it would be rather flash to keep my Fazer.

What year/value is yours?

My fazer's a V reg 1999 model, approx value £2500, probably a bit less. 50,000 miles on it :)

I don't have the phone no. for Southport Superbikes handy, although I imagine any BMW dealer can offer the same insurance deals. You can probably get their number from the BMW website. If you do phone SSB, the person to speak to is Gillian, she was entirely on the ball and clued up.

Another fan of Gillian :D I just phoned up after trying other brokers who had never heard of a 1200GS & she quoted me £269.71 fc with £250XS. If you`ve passed your IAM test its worth 10% off too :D

6 years NCD
IAM certificate
CA14 postcode
passed test for 7 years

Well pleased :D just another month to go :( Hans will be starting to build my bike on monday, I hope he`s had a good weekend :P
