Has anyone bought a Cat N bike and put it back on the road? Is Insurance a big issue?

No personal experience, but my neighbour seems to have no trouble insuring his Cat D (N in current parlance) Honda VFR800. It had been in a left side drop that took out the rad & was otherwise entirely cosmetic.

However, it's probably best to pitch the question, with specifics, to your current insurer.

My old Harley was Cat D (Cat N these days) insurance was never an issue…in fact after 11 years I wrote it off and the insurance paid out as expected..

no issues - although Cat D normally commands a slightly lower value when buying & selling..

I rebuilt a Cat D (cat N now) car and was very surprised to find it only needed an MOT test to get back on the road - and this was the usual 3+ years requirement and nothing to do with any special roadworthiness test from the Cat D moniker. If the car was under 3 years old, it wouldn’t have needed any inspection at all. No problem with insurance at all

Thanks for all your replies, insurance doesn't seem to be an issue on these bikes judging by the comments. I bought a Cat N 2012 Kawasaki 650 Versys off Ebay that has been in a RTA. It needs a new left hand footrest hanger and gear change lever plus a couple of panels are scuffed or cracked, other than that it has a few extras fitted and came with FSH and a wad of receipts. It will make a good winter hack. I will wait for the parts to come up on Ebay and stick a new MOT on it before trying to insure it the usual way.

How did you get on with the insurance on this?
I replaced the broken footrest hanger and slightly bent handlebars with used parts off eBay, put a new MOT on the bike and the insurance company insured the bike like nothing had happened.
I still own the bike and it's perfect for the roads down here.

I have had no problem in the past but I believe the only problem is - if the bike has been written off once, it cannot be written off again

i could be wrong but i am sure I read it somewhere

Motorcycles in Cat N can indeed be written off more than once, but this depends on the circumstances surrounding each incident.

However, the history of previous write-offs will remain on the vehicle's record, which can affect its resale value and insurability.

If considering purchasing a motorcycle that has been written off before, it's essential to check its history. Any motorcycle with multiple write-offs may have underlying issues that could affect safety and performance.

My Last bike, also a Kawasaki, a GTR1400 was a write off, Cat D at the time in 2017, I knew this before privately buying it as a project bike. No issues with insurance companies.
I fully inspected it, stripping back off all the plastics to check possible hidden damages, non were found, some panels I replaced rather than repaired, basically rebuilding back to a safe ride-able touring machine with only few battle scars.
