Interesting ORS Review

And before anyone wants my credentials on engineering of any kind to justify posting:

I have not ridden a GS off road.
I have not been the long way round/down or even see the show.
I have not built my own bike from an old washing machine and parts scrounged off the beach.
I have zero engineering training.

I have built a Caterham but I doubt four wheels count.

.....No, it was about a well written and surprisingly impartial ride report on another forum about......from the observations in that R-R, it seems that the Toilet12 isn't as sturdy for Off-Roading as the Hexhead, nor does the engine suit the needs of someone who wants to ride it off-road, as it's lost the low powered grunt :comfort

And that sir, is quality comprehension and your grammar school education has stood you in good stead:thumb

There are plenty here, who suffer from the 'hard of reading'

I've not picked my new bike up yet, but I happily took my current one up onto the massif of Mont Blanc, far, far above where the roads stop. For my serious off-roading I definitely prefer a more dirt-focussed bike, but I was quite impressed by the sort of gradients and surfaces that it would pull me up and through.

The only time that I really struggled was when the snow that I was riding through turned out to be covering a stream. Pulling a GS back out of running water, up a bank covered in snowdrifts was not really much fun, but it emerged unbent, started on the button, and got me back home again.

Nowadays I fit road rubber to the GS, keep it on the tarmac, and use my Husqvarna (or someone else's bike) if I want to explore the wilderness, but I'm still impressed what the GS will do if you ask it.

Why does such a great bike attract a forum of so many cantankerous miserable tossers who don't even intend to consider buying the bike? Puzzling.

I did the ORS last year on one of the old fangled twin cam things... It blew my mind what they could do offroad.. I'm guessing an 1150 would have aswell..

Perhaps we should have a new section of the forum where you can only post if you've earnt your offroad wings through some sort of extreeme expedition. It's like the offroad nazi's are the only people who can comment on the capability of a GS. can we get an Offroad Nazi smiley face.. bit like the hitler one but with knobbly tyres or summat ??:beerjug:
A bit unfair really. Those that have ridden bikes off road for a while understand what makes a good off road bike and I would say they are more qualified to speak out than those that see big power and tall seats and think that that makes a good off roader.

The 1150 is a pig compared to a 1200, but at least it still looks good year after year. A half decent rider can make an 1150 do stuff that it shouldn't, it takes balls, but they are more capable than their weight suggests. I think the last 1200 is a good all rounder, definately a better road bike and better off road, just some poor design, the plasticky feel and poorer build quality lets it down imho

The new one takes the bad bits of the 1200 and makes them worse imho, maybe the adv will improve my opinion:nenau

Well, one things stands out - the LC owners are a fragile breed who certainly don't like having the piss taken.

Unlike like the harley owners on the board who put up with all the derision and piss taking in their stride. :D .

Possibly because it's a gs forum with thousands of members:blast

Some want a gs so that people think they are hardcore adventurers, some want the bike to be a road bike, some want a big trail bike to do road and dirt. There will always be a difference of opinions, that's what forums are about.

Why do some people expect others to think the new model is always a step forwards:nenau

Off roading

Might I suggest that if the Government and local authorities continue in their financial restrictions on road repairs we will all be 'off-roading' in the near future.

I regularly use the M6 from J16-19 and the number of pot holes is alarming and becoming dangerous, particularly when other users suddenly veer to one side to avoid a crater.

Yes, ok, I know that this is a bit 'off topic'.

Not fragile, just find the the rantings of collectors of antiquity amusing allowing their green eyed monsters get the better of them . I am thinking of getting an 1100 GS to keep an old Greeves pathfinder company in the garage. Well done though for keeping history alive. Anyway why are all the 1100 people on this particular thread, there is a classic bike section after all. :comfort

But it's so much fun in here, just had a riveting 3 page read about alarm fobs:comfort

I reckon 7 pages minimum before they finish:D

Wheres Nutty?
My personnel view is the GS is fine when the tarmac finishes. It isnt a trials bike thats for sure but if you can plan your line it will role round up over and down most dry surfaces, if its wet then you want to be good.

People seem to be assuming that off-road must mean hard core enduro. It doesn't, it covers a wealth of none tarmac conditions and a multitude of different riding conditions on these surfaces. For 75% of these situations the GS is a great choice.
Totally agree :thumb2

The naysayers squad is as its usual vociferating, here and elsewhere, and has probably never ridden, let alone owned, a new GS LC. So far.

Come and ride Quebec roads and Montreal streets, and I guarantee you you will find the UK's roads are real billiard surfaces. No kidding, it is one of the main reasons I switched back to the 2013 GS, after having traded my 2009 GS for a 2012 RT.

My 1200 will be strictly be a road bike, I choose a GS over a road bike because it suits me and there are so many parts that make it great for riding with the disabilities I have.

...

Another thing stands out: the LC naysayers who peremptorily declare that the new GS IS this or IS NOT that have no experience whatsoever of even putting their arses on the saddle for a minute. :type
