Intermitent fuel leak!

Hi all,

I have an 04 1150 GS ADV and on two occasions I have noticed a fuel leak

Since the weather has chilled and my bike is left outside I have used the "choke" and pulled it to the cold start setting. According to the user manual once in the cold start setting you can open the cold start lever about another 5mm in action for very cold weather.

Now I have been using this "extended setting when coming home from night shifts when its about 0 degrees and on two occasions there has been a strong smell of fuel.

The first time I smelt it was with the bike running from cold when I was putting my gloves on and there was fuel p1ssin from the the fuel lines above the offside throttle bodies, right side as you sit on the bike

This was not a slow leak..... if you held a coffee mug under the dripping fuel it would fill it up in a couple of minutes

I switched the bike off and could not see any damage etc to the fuel lines. I restarted the bike in the normal cold setting and the fuel leak had stopped

This has happened twice now since I have owned the bike... 2 mnths, and switching off the bike and restarting has cured this strange phenomena.

Has anyone else had a similar problem and have you found the cause

I'm still using the bike daily but now use the first position cold start without any probs so far. Only reason for using the second setting is it fires up instantly when very cold.

Was this not a problem in the early adventures that was the subject of a recall ? I remember that one of my GS's had this done under warranty.

Well, doing a search I have read a bit about it but it didn't make it clear what the reason was

I will ring vines later to see if there is a recall outstanding on my bike.

Warranty Recall

This was a warranty recall to replace seals in quick connectors. I had same - fuel pissing out and forming a big pool under bike. Bige was on prop stand so fuel was gushing from right hand to left hand side flowing across cat in process Only occured when fuel system pressurised - couldn't find any sign of leak when bike not running. You should geat done asap especially if you have silver enging - this will soon be a piss yellow colour. I got this sorted then my abs went down - completely packed up whilst driving in traffic Both probs well known about by motorad who are not at all concerned. They wouldn't let this happen in BMW cars

Confirm QC seal problem

I'm with essbee on this. My own 1150gs smelled of fuel intermittantly and ha dtheseals replaced under warranty. Problem gone except for residual yellow staining on the silver painted engine.

I had a small fuel leak from where the QD joins the fuel line.
extra hose clips fixed it

Well it happened again this morning

The fuel was coming from one of the connectors connecting the rigid fuel line where it goes into the flexible line above the rhs throttle body. This does not appear to be a qiuck release connector

It also appears to be pushed home properly. I have bought a couple of stainless jubilee clips and will have a proper look tomorrow.

It does stop leaking when the engine is warm though Would it be the heat from the RHS cylinder heating the pipe and resealing or is there increased pressure in the fuel lines when cold?

I will probably put the jubilee clips on for now to hopefully cure prob and let bmw sort it out if its due for a recall.

No yellow staining yet

Mine did it too - SLM just put proper jubilee clips on, 'cos they didn't trust the crimp-on connectors. No problem in 4 years after that.

Glad to hear it I am going to try tightening the oem crimps and if it still leaks will put a jubilee around it.

If its due a recall i'm sure they would be able to sort it when doing the other bits.

Well....

I tried to crimp up the original clamps and on starting the bike I managed to give myself a good shower with BP's finest unleaded. Does not taste good

Had to resort to putting a small jubilee clip around the join which seems to have cured it. Got the bike running and gave it a good wiggle and no fuel shower

Will get a proper crimp put on when next serviced.

My 1150gs is the same with fuel p*&sing out when cold. It does clear up as it warms up possibly as the lines expand when hot and seat themselves. Will invest in some of those jubilee clips! I will also check out that recall! My dealer is pretty good about this sort of thing.
