I've got an intermittent problem with the startup (cold) on the wife's F650Gs Dakar.
Sometimes it'll start fine using the recommended no-throttle startup procedure, sometimes it won't and needs a touch of throttle for a few minutes until it's warm before being able to release the throttle and it not stall.
When it does idle without the throttle it's smooth and fine so I think fuelling and spark are OK.
I've checked/done the following (not necessarily in this order):
After I have checked or changed something I try the startup again as I reassemble the airbox/filter/snorkel and it seems to start perfectly each time.
Then when I come back to it and it's cold it might not start again with the same symptoms of needing a touch of throttle for a few minutes.
I'm pretty sure it's an air/intake problem as I can reliably work around the problem with a touch of throttle. I've not changed the air filter (it looks pretty clean and I've blown it out with the compressor).
I do wonder if it's the idle valve being tempramental, that would explain it. When I turn on the ignition, sometimes I head the little whirr of the valve self-checking, sometimes I don't. Same on ignition off.
Any thoughts, or ideas around how to test the idle valve more rigorously, or ways to check that the BMS-C unit is sending a signal to the valve?

- Removed and cleaned the idle actuator and passages in the throttle body
- Checked that the actuator moves in/out when the key is turned (it does most of the time, but not always)
- Cleaned the throttle body
- Reset the BMS-C unit by unplugging overnight.
- Tried the throttle position reset procedure (ignition on, open/close x3, start)
