I am currently using an Autocomm 300 kit on my 2004 1200GS: hard-wired into the auxillary power outlet behind the left knee. It works brilliantly most of the time, except that sometimes it cuts outs about 30 seconds after starting the engine. It will stay dead for 5 minutes or so and then come back on for 30 seconds and then die again. Turning the bike off and then back on again sometimes helps, but not always.

Has anyone else encountered the same problem, and if so is there a solution?

Hope you can help!

Sounds like you have got the good ol BMW auxilairy power socket problem due to the software being used on the bike. Your best bet is get in touch with your local BMW garage and get them to change the bikes software. This will then get rid of the problem on the bike so the socket will stay live whenever the ignition is turned on etc.

Thanks Rich

Thanks for your comments Rich. I didn't think it would take long for you to reply! I'm booked in to see the lads at Blue Bell in Crewe next Tuesday to have a software update. Fingers crossed that'll sort it!

Well, after spending a couple of hours at Blue Bell in Crewe to have my software updated, I set off for a week on the Continent with the wife and camping gear right behind me. The Autocomm worked brilliantly on the way down to Folkstone - the intermittant fault seemed to have been fixed. But... as soon as we arrived in Calais the problem had returned and stayed that way for the next 24 hours. So I bit the bullet and bought some connectors and a switch from a supermarket and set about wiring the unit directly to the battery.

I had to take the seats off to access the switch, but that didn't really bother me as it only takes 2 seconds - I left the unit on during the day and switched it off at night.

I'm fairly annoyed that the software update didn't work (especially as I had to pay to have it done) but at least I now know that the unit works as it should.

oh no thats bad news, if you like I could tell you another safe power source if you fancy a rewire that is not effected buy the aux power socket closing down that we got the go ahead from BMW to do.

To be honest Rich, I am fairly happy with the setup that I now have - it means that the unit is only powered when I want it to be. However, should I have put a fuse between the battery and the switch I installed? If so, what size/resistance?

Regards, Jenko

Cool no worries but if you need to know the power source at any time give me a shout.

As for the fuse ideally yes to save your system from getting damaged just in case any thing does happen. You will not need anything too high so say around 5w will be fine.
