Sounds like you have a browser hijacker and is infected.

Best thing to do is do an internet search on it (if you can) and get some pearlss of wisdom of the internet. You could also open it up in safe mode (probably F8 function on start up) and then run your ant-spy, anti spam, anti virus etc etc etc etc on it......

If that doesn't work..........although a complete bore, is to re-install your OS.

CliveS I've replied to your PM.

Ah, this is familiar. I suffer from this, but to a far lesser extent. Strangely enough, it only began after I installed Spyblaster (I think it was this one) as I was getting loads of adverts, showing up on the bottom toolbar. This was cured(by removing it) but Internet explorer keeps opening up. Also the PC had slowed down.

I tried using system restore, going back to August. But Spybot was version 14, but current is version 15. I tried to uninstall but PC won't let me. So currently gone back to system restore, as of two days ago. I may try uninstalling Spybot 15, restoring to August, try to uninstall Spybot 14:(

Anyway, I use Windows internet explorer, I'm only vaguely aware that I could use another system. If I went to http://www.mozilla.com/en-U would I lose "My Favorite websites" or encounter other problems. Is it generally perceived as being "safer"

I am running AVG antivirus & Spybot version 15

No - when you install Firefox it gives you the option of importing all of your IE settings. I've been using it for a few months now and for me its been a genuine improvement. The latest version of IE has tried to copy it but I sort of like the idea of having to lose one less product from the Microsoft empire.

There are also some excellent add-ons available for free.

Gonzo is correct

When you install Firefox it will give you the option to import all your bookmarks(called favorites in IE).
The add ons are vast and I use No-script which gives you the option to run a java script or not. Foxcast so you can have weather on your toolbar from any city in the world.
I would recommend a good software firewall also. I go to many dubious sites and have always been safe. Just to add on more, I also use a NAT firewall on the modem/router and close selected ports eg. 135-139, 445, 593, 4444

Ports

Hope I can explain this correctly. This is a little tough trying to simplifying it.

A software port (usually just called a 'port') is a virtual data connection that can be used by programs to exchange data directly, instead of going through a file or other temporary storage location. The most common of these are TCP and UDP ports which are used to exchange data between computers on the Internet.

For example your browser uses HTTP protocol, look in your browser address bar and you will see the address of this site as http://www.ukgser.com. and it uses port 80 is its default port.
By closing certain ports you block access through the port, like closing a door.

The ports I mentioned have high security vulnerabilities which can be exploited by a hacker. These ports are not needed for your normal internet activity so I close them.

Hope this helps

If you're connecting via an ADSL router and not through a modem which connects directly to the PS, the effect will be that most of your ports will already be blocked from the outside. I say blocked because it's not quite as thorough as proper firewalling, but it's almost as good.

To tell the difference, a modem will only let 1 PC use the connection and generally connects using USB. A router allows multiple PCs to work at the same time and connects using RJ45 ethernet cables.

If you run a command prompt (e.g. using start>run>cmd.exe) and run "ipconfig /all" and one of your interface addresses is 192.168.yyy.zzz or 10.xxx.yyy.zzz, then it is very likely that you are using a router to connect.

The thing is that there's nothing to stop badware persuading your computer to go out onto the internet and to bring further nasties in. This can happen because of dodgy emails, websites or viruses, to name a few.

So, to further improve on the protection provided by the way the router works, and to prevent your PC fetching the nasties at the same time, it is highly recommended to get a software firewall, so you can control what you do and don't want to happen.

If you connect using a modem, then don't ask any questions, just get yourself a software firewall, NOW!

Firewalls

I use Outpost firewall in conjunction with the ports blocked on the NAT ADSL router this allows my netbios to keep operating but blocked to the outside world
