Internet Explorer Problem

Ok here we go. My parents pc which is only a few months old will not load any web pages IE does not even show the "cannot find" message, all that happens is the progress bar slowly moves halfway along its little window and stops.

The internet connection works. This is confirmed by Outlook sending and receiving emails and Norton updating its virus definitions whilst I was trying to get IE to work. The lap top is on a wireless network and my lap top works fine on the same connection. IE on my parents lap top still does not work even if it is connected to the wireless modem via a network cable.

From this I have concluded that the problem is with Internet Explorer.

Has anyone any ideas how to rectify this.

I'm off to the pub so I'll look at any answers tomorrow evening.

Thanks in advance.

Dave

Have you run ad-aware on it? My Mrs. clicked on some pop up a year ago and it installed VX2 which is a nasty bit of spyware that rewrites your configuration file to take everything through them from explorer. It was a pain to flush.

i'd suggest you get ad-aware or similar first to see if it's that kind of problem.

Then buy them a mac for xmas.

Could also try going into Control Panel, Internet Options,Advanced Tab and restore defaults. :nenau

Sometimes things get changed without you knowing :eek

Norton !!! Try right clicking the yellow norton icon bottom right hand corner of screen, select disable for 15 mins, and test it, if it works then, its your network settings within Norton.

Quite a regular problem.

Nuver thing to try at the run comand type

cmd

little black window appears type

ipconfig/release

then type

ipconfig/renew

that will clean up network settings incase you have a wierd DNS entry.

let me know how you get on..

Don't put any other Web Browser on while you have problems it will only make them worse

Especiallly Firefox.

You could try re-registering the following .dlls, click Start, Run then..

regsvr32 urlmon.dll and hit OK. Then repeat for the following....

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Browseui.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll

Got this list from MS knowledge base ages ago and it seems to resolve quite a few IE 'issues'.

Thanks to you all for your help but Norton is where the problem is. Now you've found the problem for me how do I sort Norton out? I've looked but cannot find..... :nenau

Made some progress, I've had a look on the Symantec site and am running the Autofix tool. Looks like the problem is with the firewall, I'll keep you posted...

Dave

OK so I've done everything Norton suggested, Autofix found a problem and couldn't fix it then did! No better so I then downloaded the default firewall settings and that didn't help. All still works fine with Norton security turned off....

MORE HELP PLEASE....

Just rid of Norton...it's pants and is known to cause problems with all sorts of things.

There are free progs that do everything Norton does but better.

UNINSTALL NORTON!!!

Seriously. It causes more trouble than it's worth.

If you need a firewall, install ZoneAlarm or use Windows Firewall. If you're behind a broadband router with a built-in NAT firewall you don't really need either.

If you want to stop spyware install Windows Defender Beta 2 (the new name for Microsoft AntiSpyware).

For anti-virus use the free versions of either Avast - http://www.avast.com - or AVG - http://free.grisoft.com

Personally I've not had a problem with Norton. The problems are on my parents lap top and I suspect they may have fiddled with something they shouldn't have.

I need something for my parents that does not need any intervention, Norton is ideal for that... ...until now :(

Just uninstalled and am now in the process of reinstalling. Ho hum..

That part of the IE progress bar is a con - it moves slowly across when nothing's happening just to make you think something is happening. As soon as something does happen it jumps to the end of that part.
