What sort of backup do you have? - Time Machine or .mac backup.app? - You may just need to go back a while to find the missing contacts.

I have done a sync before, no probs plugged it in this time and software update was available so i clicked update, didn't think anything of it till I went to use my phone at work, no contacts.
I have phone no in call history but no names etc or pics totally blank.everything else is there as far as I can tell.

I have an external hardrive which I back up manually with superduper, I was thinking if my contacts were affected by the update, why aren't contacts on the external hardrive ???

So my logical thinking is they have been erased somehow off laptop and I have synced iphone with blank address book :nenau

I never touch addressbook as I update iphone then sync with laptop.

The file looks to be a sqlite3 database in ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/AddressBook-v22.abcddb is there a copy in your image backup?

trying to open that, addressbook previous files I think is the back up
it said chose an application to open the file but address book stays unhighlighted so it wont open tried dragging and dropping

found something on the net about deleting blank data and replace with previous file can't seem to open the file though.

I am not great with computers as it is :blast

thanks for reply think they are there just cant get at them

stop itunes and address book, move the existing one onto your desktop, and take the backup copy and drop it where it's supposed to be. Then start addressbook.

There's a way to force a directional sync in itunes so the newer version on the phone wont overwrite the one you recover.

I know this is probably a daft question but did you sync with the same macbook user as you did the first time?

Worth looking in your trash folder too. Most apps drop deleted items on there. I haven't tested it but you might get lucky. If you do have mobile me then log into it via www.me.com and see if they are on there.

Have you got Mobile Me? If you have you can sync your computer and it'll put everything back for you.

I haven't got mobileme and it is the the same macbook
I have the files on desktop will try to delete empty one and replace it with the backup :type
wish me luck :D

This will not help you now but it might help you in the future

Sign up for www.zyb.com

Its not just for Iphones but for others as well

There is also a free app for the Iphone that is most useful

The site works at its best when you change phones or use a replacement

Hope this helps
