Any Ipod problems out there (apart from the screen)?

have had 3 in total still have 2 never had problems with them - ipod problems are blown out of proportion when they do occur for various reasons..

as nadeem said Apple are very good with products under warranty, but expensive outside of it. it has a lifespan of a year (two at most) keep that in mind and its a quality product ;)

I thought you said iPod was too chav for your daughter :nenau Is it cos her old man can't forget his Essex (Chav) roots :D

iPOD

... the only mp3 thingy I've ever owned which actually works properly ..

There are loads of MP3s on the market but there's only one choice :thumb

I think I'm going to get the Sony rather than the iPOD, because:

1. every man and his dog has an ipod (see above). This shouldn't really matter, but we can't help wanting something slightly different.. :o

2. battery life, say what you like, IS a problem. For the 60GB, they quote a 20 hour battery life. This will inevitably degrade over time, and will thus become annoying. see http://www.ipodbatteryfaq.com/ Methinks they do protest too much. If it degrades, they can't change the battery, they just give you a 'refurbished' ipod. Don't know how much this costs. I think 300 quid for something which is going to be disposable after 2 years is not a good deal. The Sony battery will degrade too, but with a 35 hour life, it will take longer to become annoying. The main problem with battery life in the ipod seems to be a big colour screen. I don't expect to be watching mp4 videos or 'podcasts', whatever the hell they are.

3. Sony in general build things to last.

4. iTunes has a better and cheaper range of muzak than Sony Connect, but I foresee getting most of my stuff from 'alternative' sources

I have almost convinced myself now..

Nah, it's coz she's got ideas above her true working class roots but if an Ipod appears on Christmas day I'm sure she'll get out the Burberry :D

It looks as though it's going to have to be an Ipod anyway as I've left it a bit late and I can't get an Iriver or Rio in time for Christmas. The fact they're out of stock at all the online retailers must say something........

Just to add further despite having gone over to the dark side by turning my 20GB iPod into a door stop and favouring the vastly superior iRiver I still retain and use iTunes as my MP3 management tool de choisir. I don't buy from iTunes as they ship the tracks is a piss poor bitrate, nah I have customised the settings to give me highest quality MP3 bitrate and we are all happy. For those who don't realise iTunes/QuickTime is a free download from Apple :thumb

Really? Where you looking, Dix/Curry/Comet? :nenau

My online retailer of choice dabs is showing stocks of the following:

iriver H-340 SE 40GB 85 in stock now £239.99
iriver H10 6GB Color with FM Tuner - Midnight Blue 2 in stock now £154.99

A man of music who truly loves his daughter owes it to her and his passion to do the right thing :D

So the choice is yours, instant short term happiness for Guitargirl with an iPod or curious pleasure in you not having chosen the obvious player with an iRiver. The real appreciation will then come when guitargirl lets her iPod owning mates have a listen of her iRiver :thumb

Using amazon, pricerunner and kelkoo all the "stores" I tried were either out of stock or couldn't deliver before Christmas (one day I'll get the hang of the Christmas lark :( )

I'll give Dabs a try as I hadn't thought of them.

My other half wants a 20GB Creative MP3 player.
Does anyone have any bad experiences with these ?

Well, well, well - after every site appearing to be sold out my local Comet had an 6 GB H10 for 159.99. As much as I dislike the place it was better than waiting and hoping the thing would arrive before Christmas.

Anyway I'm holding you responsible Mr Judge although I have to say it's a nice looking piece of kit and as there's no need to buy a separate power supply or special non-scratch cover it comes out the same as a 2GB Ipod.

In fact after a little play with it ;) I had a closer look and it's excellent. Voice & text (?) recording, FM radio, timer to record from the radio, alarm, photo storage and display, very intuitive user interface. Looks good :D

Thanks for your help :thumb

I refer you to my first post in this thread - "I'm not buying Creative after they told me the < 2 year old Zen player was not repairable as it had reached the end of its service life"

That was a Creative 20GB model. No doubt you'll get a a whole bunch of people who'll give completely the opposite view :D

If I'm going to be reposnible then put my name on the little card hanging from the wrapping paper instead of yours :D

My pleasure though I do hope she's got you something better than a pair of novelty socks and a WH Smiths voucher this year!!! :nono

Ask her to load Tricks Upon Travllers on to it (assuming she has got a legitimite copy of it), you'll be amazed you don't sound half bad :P

My wife and daughter both have 20GB ipods. Both ipods have abysmal battery life—less than 10 hours. For Christmas my son will be getting a 30GB Cowen iAudio. Cost about the same as ipod, but includes the power adapter, receives FM, and records from various inputs (mic etc.) in addition to PC downloads.
