My boy's got an iPod, all synched up with his laptop, all working smoothly.

Now, my ex :mcgun:spitfire wants to get an iPod to replace the stereo and all the CD's on her narrowboat.

Not having a PC or laptop, she's asked me to uplaod all her music for her. Straightforward job, I rip all the CD's to iTunes/iPod on my PC - job's a good 'un.

However, I don't want all her crap on my PC forever and a day, so I was going to remove it all from iTunes once completed.

The problem is, how do I subsequently add music to her iPod after I've deleted all her stuff from iTunes?

What happens when I connect her iPod again - will it delete everything that's on there, or copy everything that's on there back to iTunes?

Is there an easier way of doing this so music can just be added at a later date without it all being stored on my PC?

It will sync with her folder which is now possibly empty, so yes I think you will loose all that is on the ipod unless you leave the music in her folder. Find the folder in windows explorer and see how big it actually is, its probably not taking up too much space.

We're talking an 80GB iPod, which will probably be pretty near full.

I use a Mac, which means that things are slightly different.

But when you start iTunes you can press 'Alt', and you get a prompt for creating a new (or select) a different iTunes Library.

Then you rip all that music you don't like to keep for ever, and when you're done, you 1) can delete it, or 2) be sensible and burn it on some DVD's (then if she does something silly you can sync the iPod again).

create a separate library for her on an external drive?

Hmm. Not a bad idea.

Can you have separate iTunes libraries on one machine, without having to create separate Windows accounts?

i think you can just create another library. i certainly did it on a windows machine with only one account, but i can't remember exactly how :o

only trouble i did have, was after an itunes update, it couldn't find the remote library to play from. still listed tracks, but couldn't find them
just needed to delete entries, and then re enter them.

The easiest (if you don't have cover flow) is to move the 'iTunes Music' some where else, delete the library, create a new library, and import all the music again - Or to be save just move the whole library some where else, and then do a reimport into a new Library.

On Mac (OSX) there are 3rd party scripts which can find "lost" music, I doubt that, that also exist on Windows.

Hold down the Shift key while opening iTunes - asks you to select a library, or create a new one. :thumb

I reckon I'll create a new library on an external disk.
