A few of us are thinking of a trip to Iran this summer. Any advice or thoughts from the good people of this parish who've been there?

One of the best places I've been to with motorcycle. Be nice, not some rich tourist-tosser on an expensive GS thinking he can do anything with money, and you'll be rewarded.

Easy as that.

That's what we're intending to do. We're thinking of 2-3 weeks just buzzing about the place, seeing as much as we can. Starting off from Turkey it's only one border to cross and from I've looked into up to now there's no end of sights to see, roads to play on and culture to take in.

We're heading through Turkey, couple of days with friends in Gallipoli, then through to Iran, Pakistan, into India and up to Bhutan. Want to be leaving Bhutan by October and November and head south in to India for a month or so before returning through Persia where we really take out time.

Would be good to meet up for a bier :thumb

Met a couple of chaps in the Himalayas on Dakar 650's from germany who had come overland via Saudi Iran Afganistan and Pakistan. They reckoned Iran was the best place ,lovely friendly people great food . Saudi +Afganistan were heavy needing Police escorts all the way:thumb2.They were on a 3 year RTW .Made my 2 weeks in the Hills look pretty tame:eek:

Hi (Dave??), we met when the "Turkey Trotters" rolled into town last year.

Thinking of heading into Iran via Turkey later this year.

What's the travel time for Istanbul to "Dogbiscuit". I need to try and get to Tabriz in Iran, from Istanbul in two days.

Do-able :nenau

Any idea on a route - would you go via Ankara??

Hi Pop, 2 days is doable, providing all goes well at the TR/IR border. It'll have to be a long 2 days though. as the further east you get the more you'll want to stop. Ankara from Istanbul will be quick, as it's pretty much motorway all the way. From Ankara there are a few choices, we'll be heading out along the south coast, and returning along the Black Sea road. It might be an idea for you to do something similar. Head to Adana from Ankara and then you'll find faster roads heading east than if you stay further north.

Let me know if you need anything when coming through, and if you intend to stop here for a night, and I'm not away, you'll be stopping at mine.

Hi Pete,

It's strange, I appear to be the only expat that's ever lived here that doesn't like the place. Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic city to visit, a definite "must see" on any list of destinations. But, living here can be hell sometimes and if it weren't for my business being here, I'd be off tomorrow.

It has changed, even over the last 5 years the Istanbul skyline has become littered with ugly skyscrapers and towers, and the attempts at modernising the place have been half-hearted, low-budgeted and misplaced. Of course, the Bos view at night is still amazing, and Istiklal is still great.

Sounds like a great trip.
For me it would be 4000kl Galway to Ankara.
Where is good in Iran ? would Tehran be a good destination ?
What is Ankara to Tehran 2000kl ?
Whats the paperwork like for Iran ? and could you ride a bike there and sell it in Iran or Turkey ?
Thanks for info :)

Selling a bike in Turkey's out of the question, unless you want to go through getting it registered here......which would be a complete pain. From what I've read Iranians are not allowed to buy anything over 250cc (might be old info though).

Outward we'll be through Turkey and to Iran during September this year, but on the return leg it will be in the new year sometime. No idea as to when, we'll be governed by the wind and the tide and how the flowers smell

My first Christmas and New Year away from home in over sixty years :thumb

by the way,
as i've heard , if you stay more than 10days in Iran, you have to register an iran license plate. also they say, it doesnt make much sense, for a few days delay isnt a problem, anyway you should investigate it.
