There's lots of boring threads about bike cleaning so I'll keep this very brief.

Is Gunk Engine Degreaser safe to use on the engine, paralever and wheels, or will it damage the surface finishes?

It does say on the tin to be super carefull with lacquered surfaces. I guess this stuff was designed to clean crappy old car engines, not something with a surface finish designed to look nice.

Dilute MuckOff and an old paint brush works wonders mate! I would be hesitant to use Gunk, with the exception being a 25 year old RD250E with 5mm of road treacle everywhere!

Rinse off with hot water to remove the milky white residue.... I used to clean my hands with it, without a problem. You weren't a "Biker" unless you smelled of Gunk, Castrol R & Belstaff oiled cotton...:D

Safer than it is to drink....That's for certain.

Used it on all my bikes in the past - worked a treat - those were the days :rob

yup used it on my bm although its not substantially better than muck off et al - a few years ago gunk changed to become much less corrosive than it used to be which means its now not very good at shifting 40 year old road crud and oil, but won't disolve your engine laquer

Been using it on my bike for years, but only to shift chain lube and the like. Use it on tar spots and other oily residues on BMs for a while with out effect.

Does leave your hands smelling for a while. Never washed it off with hot water either - just the cold stuff from the hose.

It will however dissolve tarmac.................

Don't forget the smell of the grease that was used to boil chains in.

On topic Gunk ain't what it used to be...bit like the finish on modern BMs, blame COSHH and the HS brigade.

I have 25ltrs of 'Jizer' aqueous de-greaser and it's rubbish at de-greasing!!

And remember 'It's not a good idea to give your dog a coat........of creosote'

Fenwicks the people who make "caravan cleaners" also do a degreaser / cleaner and its fantastic stuff, also near neat fenwicks shifts most muck on my GS. Come to think of it my wife cleans most things in the house with Fenwicks diluted to 100:1 with tap water.

The old Gunk used to look just like Tyre Black, and could be painted on just the same, as one of the Police Motorcycle section found out when getting his bike ready for a Royal Visit, not a happy bunny at all:nenau and he thought I'd given it to him deliberately as well:augie

Back in 1972 I reluctantly sold my bikes and moved from Somerset to Scotland (it has been a good move :thumb).

Many, many years later my parents had a clean out and when they visited brought me a box of 'things' they had found in the garage.

I now have a genuine 1960s tin of Linklife and a tin of full-strength Gunk.

The Gunk is like road tar and the smell makes my eyes water - not like the namby-pamby PC correct modern stuff :rob

It used to clean my Ariel 'VB' and AJS 350 (Model 16, heavyweight) fine :thumb

Ah, those smells bring it all back, like the waxed cotton flysheet on my Millets tent on a hot day in the I.O.M. :D
