Having suffererd numerous brake seizure's over the past few years all on BMW's can anyone tell me if you can remove the pad retaining pin, clean it and replace without having to take the caliper off each time?

Im just thinking it may be a quick and easy way to prevent any potential problems.

If not I supose I'll have to find time to strip them and clean them well.

I don't have any problems at the moment hoever if they don't seize at some point before April it will be a first!

Yep - tis easy. Problem is that I've found that the retaining pin isn't the main issue. Mine tend to get sticky during the winter as well, mainly because the pistons get all gummed up with shite. I took my calipers apart for a thorough clean-up a couple of times in quick succession the other year but found it didn't really help for long. Now I find that it's equally effective to just give them a good spraying of brake cleaner once a week or so, and let it soak in overnight - and only take them all apart if it gets really bad.

Mines an 1150 btw... don't know about 12's if thats what you've got.

I've just had a thought (dangerous) but if I remove the pin I could coat it in a thin layer of ACF 50 to stop it corroding... seems to do wonders at preventing rust.

I know its not a good idea to get ACF 50 on the discs or pads however if I apply it with a cotton bud on to the Pin only we'll see what happens.

What do you reckon?
