Forgive my lack of BMWesqueness but Ive got a question for all you experienced dudes. Ive just taken posession of a 2 1/2 year old 1150 GS from a major dealer. Ive just found (after a few weeks of ownership) that the finish on the exterior of the cylinder casing (on both sides of the engine) is flaking away and very soon it'll be very ugly. Now I know this will spark anger in some of you that the asthetic thing shouldnt really matter - but this was (to me) an expensive purcahase and a lifetime ambition to become one of the clan.Is this a general thing or have I just bought 'one of those' bikes.I'd welcome your views and opinions. Thanks !!!!

Mines 5 1/2 yrs old, done 50k and non GS mates often comment on how good the finish is.
Sounds like you've bought a bag of shite, hope I havnt sparked anger.

Welcome to the chamber of abuse.:grndevil

Whip'em off (use search button to find out easy way) and get them down to a local powder coating firm...won't cost you more than 20 quid and they'll be good for years ;)

It's not the first time people complain about rust on 1150.

It's strange, i see 1100s from 1994 today looking as new. Mine 1998 has not even few millimetre spots of rust.

Looks like BMW from 1150 went down on selection of materials? Same goes to final drives - i see too many newer 1150 FD failures on ADV rider, altough the bevel boxes should be exacly the same on 1150 and 1100 models, right? So it's about materials then?

cheers for the replies guys ....all gratefully accepted (even the rather 'to the point' one !!!! Thanks for your advice and interest :beerjug:

And while you're at the powdercoaters get the fork brace done before it looks like a dogs backside!! Three salt laden British winters and mines got more scabs than a very scabby thing!!
