Hi, It seems like it might be the time for a servorectomy.. but just before I pull the trigger, I thought I'd check to see if anyone has an opinion...

2002 GSA, ABS and Servo brakes, the general warning light on, 4Hz flashing on the ABS warning light which suggests at least one system out, rear brake largely ineffective with no servo noise at standstill, front brakes OK, with servo noise at standstill ( although less abrupt than normal when moving).

Will reset to no fault after my 30 mile commute.

Can't see a problem with brake bulbs or switches, brake light (LED) works as expected.

Any suggestions for what else I need to check / renew / kick?

Thanks

Mark

The bike is a 52 registration, so it could be early 03..

Keep managing to get it all to reset after about 20 miles running, which makes me suspect teh battery is on its way out - probably due a new one.

Think I'll try that first!

More confusion - after two reasonably rapid runs, it started sluggishly this morning, but without any problems from the ABS etc warning lights.

New battery on order..

hi mark
i would change all brake fluids then reset
also check pad thickness
also plug in to gt1 at dealer for brake pressure check

then no joy rip that thing out :D
also check cranking volts if it drops below 10 v ,,,,,,,,,,new batty need

Dont know if the problem is same with 1150 as 1100, but my wife always had a problem with the abs lights comming on, and sluggish starting, I would leave it on an optimate and eventualy changed the battery then, stoped at a shop tried to start and nothing !!!
It was the magnets on the outside of the starter motor case, degrading, the bits then get chewed up and form a bit of a mush and it was causing the very hard starting and thefore draining the battery which was causing the abs fault!!! eventualy one of the magnets fell of in enough of a lump to jam up the whole system.
New starter motor and the thing has been like a new bike, easy starting, abs warning never comes on any more.
Might be worth having a look at.

Hi,

I have a 2005 R1200GS. Bought it about 3 months ago and is my first GS. Is it normal for the brake servos to be noisy? I have a mate with a 2007 R1200GS and his brakes do not make any noise. Is it something that they refined with later models or do I have a potential problem?

Tks in advance.

Servo was removed in 2006, hence, no noise...

Servos

BMW discontinued fitting servos, best ever move. When they start making 1150's again even better move.

All these people who paid BMW £750 extra for Servo ABS on a new bike, from late 2002 to 2005/6, are now removing it at extra cost to themselves..............what a complete waste of time, money and effort

I had one ServoABS GS bike in 2004, brand new...............used it for a year and 8000 miles and got shot asap.................the brakes were awful.............and ordered a new 1150GSA in 2005......................sans ABS

BTW....................everyone says that it is very dangerous to ride a bike without ABS..........................you shouldn't do a Servoectomy and lose the ABS:augie:D

I got through the summer with no major problems but the 4hz light has come back with a vengeance. MOT at local dealers today and the lights would not go out. They were fine after another 30 miles, and I mercilessly have hammered the now functional ABS on some local backroads, demonstrating the prowess of the system on mud and moss.

So, intermittent, goes away with a long run, servo brakes and abs working fine when it needs to....

Any more ideas?

Aha, tks. Was it removed because it was problematic? Is it something to keep an eye on?

Some people think so, others of us just get on and ride the bike 'cos it's what we've got. Might go wrong some day, but that's true of lots of things. No real need to "keep an eye" as the electronics does so and the warning lights are pretty blatant when you need to know something...

Sober and sensible answer. Thanks!! :thumb
