My 1200 will be 5 in a couple of weeks! It's been totally reliable, no corrosion & even has it's origonal battery fitted! But I'm starting to think it's a good time to change her for a new one? The free pannier deal is back, VAT due to go up, and BMW seem to be holding back on the big price hikes of their competitors - But for how long?

So why my GS is still worth a chunk, and the new bikes "reasonable" is it worth trading up before the gap get's too wide?
Should I get rid & be grateful she has cost me nothing - Or celebrate the fact she is a good 'un, and cherish her forever?

And finally, is the new engine alone reason enough to buy the new bike?

I have a trade up figure in my head - and I won't be budged on that, but even if the price is agreed, I still don't know if I'd be doing the right thing?

Any advice would be most helpful.:thumb

If it's been totally reliable and you are still happy with it why change it? :)

IMHO, the new engine is not worth trading up for, if you have a good example of the older 1200GS. Especially if its been reliable as yours has.

If your old GS is fitted with Cat eliminator headers and maybe an Accelerator Module. Then your engine will perform very similar to the new GS's.

Just my opinion having compared the old and new over several hundred miles.

Mine's going on 6 years old and if I was you I'd be tempted to spend the money on tweaking your bike:
As others have said: De-catted exhaust system, new shocks, comfy saddle etc?

.....oh! and a big European or Moroccan tour?

However there's nowt quite like that new bike thing..... :green gri

Wait for the water cooled gs due 2012.

This should be a totally new bike, not a updated version.

Don't be logical or you'll ride a scooter!

Once you start on this path there is no end; it is NEVER worth trading in your bike for a new one; I still see the BMW that I sold locally about 10 years ago, around the town and the owner is still very happy with it and he has had no real problems; I am on my fifth (!) new bike since then - each one has been an improvement but my ONLY justification for changing them (if anybody cared or believed me) was that it was a lot cheaper than changing my 11 year old Ford Focus that I hardly ever use!
If you can afford it then I say go ahead and treat yourself. Old age begins at 85 (I heard on Radio 4 this morning) so make the best of the many years remaining!

Well, I toddled off to Clarks BMW to have a look! I did like the 30th Anniversery bike, but basically felt uninspired:confused:
I had this with my last bike (CB1300 Honda) which I had for 5 years & loved. But every time I tried to chop it in for the half faired CB1300S, I just could not see the point - I seem to have a problem with trading in like for like.

We did talk figures, and it seems the price has jumped by a grand since I last enquired in February, but strangely, my bike has remained static in value - Strange that?:augie Anyway, we were about £500 from talking the same language, so we left it at that.

So I have decided to spend a bit of money on the GS, and wait until an all new model comes along. I'm going to de-cat the headers, and maybe do something with the screen & perhaps a Sargent seat.
And I'm just going to enjoy my GS for what it is - A great bike that owes me nothing.

A bit like you lot have suggested really!:bow

Fast yellow with alloys.

Everything else is less.

Great looking bike mate.:thumb

Stick with what you've got if it hasn't given you any problems.

Just as a bit of info, my mate has bought the Givi airflow screen and it really does take the wind off you. Great modification (that I'm thinking of myself) along with a Sargent seat.

Good luck

Cheers for that mate:thumb Just had a look at the Givi, it's a nice looking screen for £152. First thing I did was put the screen in the fully down position, as the buffeting was awful. And for the last year or so, have been thinking either get a proper one, or take the useless feckin thing off.

Going to order the Remus headers from Nippy today as well - I seem to recall from previous threads, it's not worth changing the end can?

I know what I would like! A member from here sent me a full Akropovic titanium system instead of the tank bag I had bought:drool

It broke my heart sending it on to the rightful owner:tears b@stard stuck it straight on ebay:nenau
