Is the grass 'orangier' on the other side?

The reason I've sold my 12GSA is because of the poxy final drive, I've subscribed to the KTM forum and I have to say it's quite refreshing

No threads about fuel pump controllers
No threads about EWS problems
No stories about recovery trucks
etc etc etc

I'm not stupid enough to believe that KTM's never fail but there certainly doesn't seem to be threads about consistent problematic components that are common place here.

Are they all about fork seals and wheel rims made of cheese instead?? :augie

I'd rather replace a set of fork seals once a year than have to re-build a pile of sh** final drive every 10k!

Like I said, I know their not perfect but like I also said, There's no repetitive "The qualities gone to sh** threads"

valves

Take out the two crosshead screws in the fork tops and replace them with the KTM power parts air bleed valves every now and again you can release the air from the fork tubes and helps stop the fork seals blowing.....:Motomartin

hhmmmm interesting had a go on one a few months ago certainly an exilerating ride,i wonder how many have got a ktm then gone back to a g.s

full service intervals are a must as the valve clearances like to be spot on.

get yourself a G2 throttle cam to smooth the throttle responce

and get some ackras for it,sod the fuel consumption,,, feel the thunder:thumb2

The valves really dont move much at all....

Akras are fine. The Akra map is a bit of a fuel-eater.
Wings are a much cheaper option (and identical quality as akrapovic and in fact some nicer options that Akra dont have).
The thing you will find is that the stock exhausts get soooo hot because of the damn catalytic converter. Also, theyre quite heavy - the weight difference is as much as my luggage...

not quite so, when i took mine in for a service at Aim's Daren said that the clearances had got very tight,so i would say they are well worth keeping an eye on:thumb2

How many miles was that?

Mine didnt need adjustment for the 9k mile service last september.
I did the 18k service in July - all were not only in spec, they were still on the right side of the spec...

that was on the 9k service, however dont you have the smoother and superior 950:D:D:D:D

Well I went and picked it up today in the fecking shite weather (in a van:augie)

I did take it for a quick spin this afternoon but only for about 20 miles. She certainly do like to get up and go!

aye you wait till its dry and you can give her the full berries:D

Well I've had it 3 days now,

My impressions of the bike are ...

Pro's.
Lovely specialist components
Very "Rallye Bike" feel to it.
Lovely sounding even with the standard pipes
But most of all is the engine, oh that incredible engine, jesus christ what an engine, The throttle control is more like a fast forward button!
It's a very simple bike, No frills, No computers, No bullshit.
It's got a little storage compartment on the top of the tank which sounds like a little thing but it makes a HUGE difference!

Con's
It's not as slick at a BMW and by that I mean I've got a key for the ignition and one EACH for the 3 bits of luggage, If you want heated grips they're not intergrated into the switchgear they're accessory- like with a seperate switch. Like I say, Not quite as slick.
The throttle response is razor sharp, You can't snooze for a minute.
It's a pain in the arse to get on the centre stand.

I must mention that I came to this bike from a fully spec'd GSA12 which had more equipment that really a motorbike needs.

Overall I bloody love it!

"It's a pain in the arse to get on the centre stand."

+1 (does get slightly easier with time . . . despite getting older!)
My technique is to stand well towards back of bike with left foot on centre stand 'pedal'.
Both hands on RH pannier frame and pull backwards in one motion . . . hope that helps!

Dear Charles Atlas
i've done the course now send the muscles:D

Had My 990 a month now, loving every minute of it, It goes like a rocket and sounds tremendous, even on standard pipes.

The only drawbacks for me are :- fuel economy and no temp guage, but the thrill of the ride makes these matters insignificant:D

I love them, particularly the 990R:drool

But they do have 'issues' just like most bikes.

I know of one that had to be abandoned in southern Morocco (it's still there somewhere:()....his next trip will be on a GS!... and even though the forks were bled daily both seals completely blew on this one:blast

Plus a few wrecks after going through deep water:blast

Returned a few weeks ago from the second and for me physically (read old fart) toughest off-road trip yet to Morocco. Last year both fork seals failed, this year l had fitted fork bleed valves and neoprene sox's to cover the sliders and no problems, the forks were perfect, £40 well spent.
Still be best bike l have ever owned.
Yes, that is a spare 5 litres of fuel strapped on the back but l never needed it.
Now if only l could be sorted out for £40 it would be a miracle.
