I intent to change my FD oil very shortly, so I'm taking on board the view to grease the pinion splines at the same time,,

Simple question then .... is there a recommended spec for this operation?? ....Lithium based or Molybdenum based grease

i used a moly type cv joint grease when i did mine, had no probs since

Kremmen,

I did mine yesterday having read many bits of info on here and the BMW manual. I used Optimol TA which is a very thick silver coloured grease and is what is recommended. Not sure how much it cost as I got it years ago when i did the exhausts on my R100RT. It is very sticky and is designed to work under high pressure and temp. Any similar specced grease will do, many people use Honda Moly see http://www.r1200gs.info/howto/reardrive.html or search the 1200 section for "final drive"

One thing I have noticed is that a number of people have said they used Staburags NBU 30 PTM. This grease is for lubricating the mating surfaces of the rubber gaiter not the splines. It is described as an assembly grease. I just used a proprietory silicone assembly grease.

Suggest you read this first, top link, although it is a simple job. http://caber.com/r1200gs/r1200gsfinaldrive/index.html

Remember to replace the parallel link nut as it is a locknut that distorts in use.

Best of luck, oh and by the way, mating the splines up when refitting is a bit of a bugger - just presevere it will fit together:thumb2
